He is about 20 lbs I'm guessing, first vet visit tomorrow so will no exactly then. My right arm is getting a real workout needless to say. At what point did everyone stop this "service"?? I suppose since I can carry a 50 lb bag of dog food that would be my limit but I don't normally do that in the dark up and down stairs |

I had the same thing going on here. I carried Steel for several reasons...1. I was over cautious about his joints - he was born with a thing called swimmer puppy syndrome (no stairs). 2. I didn't want him to explode pee once he was loose from the crate and not make it (long trip) to the door 3. He was loud after he started to grow, I didn't want to cause a ruckus and wake the other dogs and kids. I can promise you one thing - You will not be able to carry him when he weighs 50lbs. Not so much because of his weight but because his arms and legs will be going everywhere. His body will be long and awkward. The last thing you want to do is try to take a flight of stairs holding a 50lb sheepdog. Steel would hold his arms out and try to stop me from shutting the door and the force would just about send me flying down the stairs! That was at about 40lbs. You will adjust. You all will adjust. By the time he is that big your potty visits will lessen. He is just a lil babe right now so the extra snuggle you get down the stairs is still fun and his bladder may do the exploding I was talking about all the way down the stairs if you aren't carrying him but I promise that will stop as the trips lessen and that won't take long. Steel was down to one potty break by 3mo. but my night time is rather short 8pm - 2am. I was also doing it when there was no snow outside so he wasn't tempted to play. Please be careful. Landing on your tailbone on some stairs holding ANY extra weight is going to hurt! |
