amount of food for 9 week old oes?

Hi. We just got our puppy a week ago and loving her to the moon and back. Great puppy.. Does anyone have any idea on the amount they should be eating in a day? Thanks.. We have been giving her dry kibble with a little water added to it.

I can't remember the amount exactly. I dump the bag into another sealable container in my home. The bag should tell you as should your vet. I was instructed 3 times a day as to the frequency if you aren't going to free feed. As for the amount, I measured and then marked a hard plastic cup with a sharpie so I wouldn't have to continuously measure but would be exact every time. I remember thinking it was a lot compared to my older dogs. Sorry not much help other than a quick call to your vet or if you still have the bag it should say on it.
Thank you. I too converted the food in larger container and threww away the bag. I will go to a store and check out the bag. I've been doing 3x times a day with 3 cups total. She eats it all. Don't want to over feed nor have hungry dog.

That's a start. You'll have to adjust the amount up or down for your own pup. Very good quality is mandatory, don't go with the cheapest puppy food. Second, if the end product is loose, maybe too much at one feeding or too much overall. But then puppies often are a bit loose.

Everyone says "ask your vet" and not a bad idea except vet's are often clueless too and go by the pup's appearance; too fat, lean. Young pups are a bit chunky but as they expand, they will "lean up" a bit. You don't want a chunky 16 weeker. You'll know because you won't be able to keep your hands off this pup and you'll learn by feel.

Puppy activity, puppy's changing whim (sometimes they just nibble other times they dive in head first.) I had one dog who wasn't a good eater all her life, from puppyhood to senior dog. She liked herself slim and trim. If she overate one day, she wouldn't eat the next. I should have such control.
And just remember, dog food companies who put "recommended" feeding info on the bags are trying to sell more dog food! I have found that neither of my dogs has come close to eating the recommended amounts, and I have/had 2 big boys (both over 110 lbs.).

Oscar has never eaten more than 4.5 cups per day (with some treats), even at his most active stage.

As long as you treat the guidelines on the food bag as such, you should be fine.

Also, my vet gave me a way to check Oscar to see if he was the correct weight. Basically, a dog at healthy weight should have a thin layer of fat over their ribs. My vet said that the ribs of a dog at healthy weight should feel like the back of your hand, and an overweight dog feels more like the palm of your hand, under your thumb.

Hope that helps!

oh, Laurie, I like that! I've yet to find Kdog's ribs but it's my own fault. Also when pup is wet in the bath it quickly becomes obvious: when viewed from the side the chest is lower and the stomach/gut tucks up nicely to pelvis. When viewed from the top, there is a nice pull in behind the ribs going to pelvis. The line from the ribs to pelvis shouldn't be straight or worse yet, a bit bloated. I've always used the fingers between the ribs, they should be felt but not out standing. Back of hand is a quick reference!

With a pup, still too early for these guidelines as the body is changing quickly.
Thanks, Susan. I thought the hand trick was quite useful, much easier than trying to see the shape of an OES in a growing and changing coat! (I can't tell you how many times I said to my hubby "Does Oscar looks like he's getting fat?", only to see how much weight he "lost" after his coat was shaved. 8)

Awesome answers. Thanks a lot! She is eating 3 cups of dry with a little water added to it. I'm giving her Taste of Wild Puppy Prairie. She finishes it in one sitting. The bag reads 2 and a fourth to 3 and a half. Good to know what they should be at 16 weeks and the hand tip is great. Thanks again..
Remember, if too much, she'll have loose stools.....well, looser than normal puppy poop. Some feedings she may not eat.......especially when the teething begins in a few months, don't panic. You'll know, she'll be gnawing on everything! try to dislodge the tooth or soothe tender gums.
Since you posted that let me say before I forget and to let you know so you don't freak out because I did! I saw no change in stool, in chewing or in eating habits - Steel is a good chewer, he sticks to his fake bones and I would say he is an average chewer. He didn't go crazy or start chewing on anything else. All of a sudden I started finding teeth everywhere on the floor. We were stepping on them, I was vacuuming them, I would just be walking and then all of a sudden there would be another one! It was like tooth palooza up in here! I think he must have had 500 teeth in his mouth! I kept the first 4 just because. Big teeth too, I don't know how the heck he was chewing anything. This went on for about 2 maybe 3 weeks then we were all done. So don't be alarmed, just wear shoes because it hurts when you step on them! Hehe.
anks for teeth info. I would have been freaked out to see a lot of teeth falling out. Totally off subject, but we can't believe how quiet she is. I mean when she is walking near us. Nickname her Stealth.
For potty training purposes I put a bell on Steel's collar so I always knew where he was. There was no sneaking or stealth behavior going on PLUS lately as he as grown you can't exactly miss him!!! Because of his height and his tail, we have all learned to NEVER leave things near the edge of a table and just because you stop walking doesn't mean he does! We sometimes get a wet nose in the rear end or moved into a wall. I wouldn't at all describe Steel as stealth!!! I think as she gets older and larger that name will fade. I'm not saying Steel can't be sneaky and quick when he wants to be but there is nothing quiet about it -
