not very nice behavior
I have had many dogs over the years, all nice, easily trained and pleasant to be around. I am at my wit's end. ANY thoughts and ideas would be appreciated. |

| Time for more obedience classes and perhaps more serious challenges for this hyper girl. She needs more physical and brain exercise. Starting with the physical, walks aren't enough, she needs to run, hard! (I'm reminded of story........here if I remember.........of a show dog who just wasn't behaving. Another exhibitor asked to take the dog and ran it outside for an extended period. Though they were competitors, he realized the dog needed to "explode." Dog was returned and settled nicely was the calm show dog). Remember these are working dogs and they need a job, couch potato may work later but in their youth their bodies and minds need to work. So in addition to physical work out add a mental challenge.........advanced obedience, agility, rally, nose dog work......something for her to exercise her brain instead of pawing and expecting you to "do something with me." Kensie, even at her older age gets into a nervous state and will paw and actually nip, "Come on, I need to explode." While neither DH or I run anymore (walking is even a challenge) neighbor dog Jack is always up for a session with Kdog of race the fence, chase the cats, bark at the cars, etc. |

I found that with sheepdogs, training doesn't stop when your 8 week obedience class ends. It's a continual thing. We did 3 sessions of 8-week puppy classes, and pulled out halfway through the 3rd session, because it wasn't working. We got a trainer that we worked one-on-one with, and figured out that the problem wasn't the classes, it was us. We weren't doing enough in between classes to help our dogs learn their commands, learn their manners, and just learn their rank in the household- that is to say, after all us uprights.  Even now, our girls are 7 years old and we still take the occasional refresher class. In fact, we just started to do herding, something completely new for us. Our girls love being active, love learning new things. I can see them get bored, and I'll take them out in the yard and run them through their commands, mixing it up and even attempting to teach them new ones just to keep them on their toes and happy. We travel a lot with our girls, so them being good with their commands is essential. We're planning a big trip in May, so I'm getting us back into class once a week, maybe twice, between now and then, to reinforce not only who is boss, but what my expectations of them are. Whic is of course, perfection.  |
