Feeding advice please

I'm about to switch Steel to eating twice a day intend of 3 times a day. I have been trying to do this for a couple of weeks now unsuccessfully. I'm weak, he is really cute! HELP! I'm doing this because I think I am supposed to not because he is leaving food in his bowl ever first of all. He is always interested in eating as long as it is the right kind of food! Steel is a very structured boy so what is happening is when it is time for his 2nd meal (the one I'm trying to cut out) he barks at me. Paces to the food spot barks there, back to me - barks. He is an antsy mess. He behaves this way whenever he needs/wants something. Usually this is a fantastic trait. He is in the habit of eating then and he is reminding me. How am I supposed to break the habit? I have tried taking him out instead, playing, you name it....he still goes back to the original behavior. He didn't forget, doesn't at all get distracted. If I even think about sitting down he bumps me with his head to get up and does the head tilt. I know I have some nerve sitting down but I thought he might get the picture that way. Nope. I have done nothing but reinforce the behavior by giving in and getting his food as of yet so I've decided to give it another try when my kids are home over Christmas break and can help keep me strong when he pulls the 'ole head tilt on me. Any suggestions?

Perhaps you can substitute a wobbler, busy-buddy, or stuffed Kong for his 2nd meal? It might make him feel like he's getting more food than he is, and occupy him until the fuss passes. As time goes on, you can reduce the amount of kibble you put in these, until he's totally weaned from his extra meal.

I'm just thinking out loud, though. We're a 1-dog household, and Benson free-feeds. (She's exceptionally good at self-regulating.) I'm sure someone with more experience can give you better advice!

Good luck resisting that head tilt!
Amazing how they can "tell time." I've got one of those too, tho she starts getting insistent 15 minutes before the scheduled time.

I agree with the Kong with some reward inside. You can also put down a bowl with limited vegetables......right now we are doing one or two of: Brusses sprouts, carrots, cauliflower or broccoli stems or raw sweet potato. Don't pick them up if uneaten, leave them until the #2 meal.
I do have a couple of kongs hidden for emergency purposes.... Skye can't have them or much of anything. She is a massive chewer. Has had 2 root canals from splitting her teeth. She doesn't know when to stop. She puts a nylabone to shame! The kongs are for when I take Skye some where and leave Sonny. It might work because as I said I will be doing this when the kids are home for break so I won't be out on the roads I will be right there watching making sure Skye isn't snatching it chewing the actual Kong! It will be new to him also so maybe just maybe. The veges are something he already gets and I usually mix that with his food so I don't get soupy poopy or a very disturbing odor coming out of him! My daughter and I eat a ton, I think that is why he is hooked. She has to, I like them and for some reason he does to. The other dogs prefer garbage gut food. He Mr. Picky likes fresh salads and healthy food. I'm putting peanut butter in the kong right? He likes that. I have these disc things to put in there but I think they are probably stale. I kept them in a ziploc but that can only work for so long.
I am thinking that Steele is just a few weeks older than Gunner is. Gunner is now on 2x a day feeding but only because he stuck his nose up and really did not eat his lunch (2nd of 3) feedings. I kind of depended on him to show me. He would just take a few nibbles and that was it so that was my indication that he was satisfied with what he was getting. I guess I am wondering if Steele is actually hungry or just being bratty.....hmmmmm. Maybe a good way to tell is like Jonesy and Sheepieboss recommended.... just try and substitute a meal with a wobbler or busy-buddy with some kibbles. I would think of a few things though....is he actually hungry(how is his weight?) or he is going through a growth spurt and wants and needs more? Just like us humans, each pup is individual to their needs and wants. Once Gunner started sticking his nose up to his 2nd meal did not mean he was totally satisfied to wait for dinner time. I give him a few treats or a chew in between to keep him satisfied. I would not be able to resist the head tilt either....I guess we are all suckers to that!
I gave it a shot yesterday - a mix of a few things. I checked my calendar and was able to move appts around to his middle feeding. This means I will be gone. I will make it long enough that I will put him in his crate. I don't have one today but I will just leave anyway. When I got back yesterday he started right up with the Aww man I'm dying wheres my food pacing so I took him to the fridge and grabbed the container with the carrots and paced with him only I made him sit and then down and then I gave him a carrot each time when we got to the food spot. He looked amazed! Finally he followed me to the living room and sat down for real on his own. The other dogs don't like carrots so they could have cared less about what was going on. That's where I can go today is to buy more carrots! Loves broccoli too but that and cauliflower make him real gassy. Black olives are a favorite but I'm not sure how healthy those are. Leaving during the feeding time seems to at least get my weak self out of the way for a little while. He followed me around right up my toochie for most of the day but it was polite not pacing and I think that will adjust. His weight is o.k. He should be a smaller Sheepie based on parents. I have had an overweight dog before and have no desire to experience that ever again so I am very careful. I obviously have a hard time seeing a waist line so I do my best to look when he is wet in the shower and feeling him while petting. The last time I checked he was 57lbs I think. That was about 2 maybe 3 weeks ago. My schedule is a disaster right now - everything is a blur (holidays). As I mentioned in the previous post he isn't leaving food, I'm only taking away that feeding because I think I should. Over analytical I guess. I don't want to be feeding him 3x's a day for the rest of his life. OOOO and YES he is a brat but a very well behaved one. :hearts: Someone please tell me they understand that sentence. GEEZ. Anyway, I don't want him to get overweight. For a small Sheepie 57lbs. is kind of a lot right now in my mind. Genetics are weird so maybe he is pulling from a grandpa or something so I don't want to slow down the amount but I also don't won't to add added stress to developing bones. Ahh, I could go on but won't see what you are dealing with?! Anyone need a worrier, just let me know! I've got your back!
