OUT OF THE CRATE

JESSY TURNED 6 MONTHS OLD ON SATURDAY. ALTHOUGH HIS CRATE IS ALWAYS OPEN, HE NEVER USES IT FOR PEACE AND QUIET OR TO JUST GET AWAY. WHEN HE TAKES A NAP HE IS ALWAYS IN THE BATHROOM WITH THE COOL TILE AGAINST HIS BACK AND UNDER HIS BELLY. HE GOES INTO HIS CRATE AT NIGHT, BUT WHEN I FELL ASLEEP WATCHING TV AND WOKE UP 2 HOURS LATER, JESSY WAS FAST ASLEEP IN THE BATHROOM. IS IT OK TO LET JESSY SLEEP IN HIS PREFERRED SPOT IN THE BATHROOM ALL NIGHT. HE DOES NOT HAVE ANY ACCIDENTS WHEN ALLOWED TO DO THIS. HE IS OK IN THECRATE AT NIGHT, BUT DEFINATELY PREFERS THE BATHROOM.
THANK YOU,
ELLEN, JESSY AND OZZIE

I am going to give you a really helpful answer. It all depends on the dog. :)

We have had two OES puppies in our lives, and both were reliably housebroken overnight by six months or earlier. Neither slept in a crate, and both were allowed the run of the master bedroom and bathroom overnight. Both slept on the cool bathroom tile, and neither ever chewed anything inappropriate. I am guessing that we were quite lucky! :)

That said, if you are a heavy sleeper, or have a teething puppy or active chewer, the dog would be safer in a crate. Also, it prepares them for crating at the vet and/or groomer, so it can be good in that way, too.

Basically, it depends upon the dog. 8) Aren't I helpful?

Laurie and Oscar, a really really really good boy
As long as he is trustworthy, I would leave him out of the crate. Good boy Jesse :hearts:
Try it and see how it goes. At seven months, Charm had the run of the house, and never had issues. I must admit that I was pretty nervous about it though. Jessy sounds mature but that can be fleeting.

This is it in a nutshell. Benson was out of her crate by 8 months old, in part because we have a VERY small bedroom and needed the space. (We had to remove a small bureau to fit her crate in the bedroom, and I wanted it back!) Besides, we are home with her all day, and I tend to be a relatively light sleeper.

We made sure she was trustworthy in the bedroom/bathroom area for a couple of months before we let her loose on the house overnight.

Good luck! Jesse sounds like a really good boy!

Ours are out of the crate and Mady and Gracie usually end up on the tiled floor of our shower room. Virginia stays in our room. I guess she figures she is one of the adults. You could try closing all the doors except the one to the bathroom so that there isn't anywhere fun to wander.
Hollie is now 1yr and never been crated. I do have a golden retriever so she has a companion and they have their sleeping area for the night. Both have comfY beds to lay on but prefer sleeping on the tiled floor.
