I'm new to this forum and I'll be a first time OES puppy owner in early January!! So excited!!! I want to be prepared before my puppy arrives. Any suggestions on what I should add to my puppy supply list? Special brushes? Shampoo? Certain kind of food/treats? etc. Also, I currently have a 4yr old miniature pinscher named Whiskey. What's the best way to introduce them? I was thinking of introducing them outside in a neutral environment and then maybe letting the new puppy explore my home without Whiskey there. Should I spend a couple of days with my puppy alone when I first bring him home and have a friend watch Whiskey? Thanks for your help! -Erin |

I've always been pretty lucky introducing new pets to the home. I watch carefully, make sure everyone has a safe place to get away for a break (usually their crate), and let them fuss a bit to set up the pecking order. There might be an occasional growl and maybe a quick nip to establish who is boss, but as long as there's no real aggression, I let them work it out. Letting your new pup and Whiskey meet outside on neutral ground for their first sniff and greet is a good idea. I wouldn't send Whiskey away, though - the new puppy is entering his territory, and needs to learn his/her place in the hierarchy right away. Otherwise, the puppy may be more distressed when she's ousted from areas she claimed in his absence. Good luck, and take lots of pictures when your new furbaby arrives! |
Consider crate training. Dogs like to have a private place where they can go when stressed. It is not punishment........think of it as their "man cave." Having a safe calm place to put the dog comes in handy if workmen come and maybe accidently leave the door open. The dog won't rush out. Having a party? The dog has a calm place to go when the house filled with strangers. |
