I am worried about his mental health. He had diarrhea all night. None this am. He is very quiet this am, not his usual bouncing self. I called the vet. He said he'll be fine....but he is not a OES specialist. How long to recover from this traumatic day? Please someone get back to me as soon as you can. I am soo upset. They gave me back my money this am.............but how could they groom a 41/2 month old pup for 4 hrs straight?????????????/ |

Bathe him and then blow off the water, put in drying crate and once dry fluff out. Most of the time they are sitting quietly waiting for their turn on the grooming table. I can see 4 1/2 hours. Yes, a bit much for a 4 month old pup and wondering why you didn't do it yourself? OES are major grooming investments and most shops don't know how or will charge an arm and a leg. I suggest you start assembling the tools and equipment necessary for future groomings. In mean time, keep him off food, maybe a little rice for 24 hours until his tummy is better. Give him 24 hours to feel sorry for himself and then take him for a walk, outside air will do him wonders. |
Thank you so much for the kindful and quick reply. I do brush him daily, but I thought a mini spa bath with fanct shampoo [only $10 for a puppy under 6 months old.] When they suggested a small trim, I....I guess I wasn't thinking.............obviouslt I wasn't. Your suggestion is great. Thank you again Ellen, Jessy and Ozzie |
It does make you wonder how a "small half inch or whatever it was trim" can be turned into "leave half inch long"-someone wasn't listening. No damage will be done and fur will grow quite quickly-mind he doesn't get cold-I don't know what your weather is like- ours is getting damp and chilly,x |
I tend to get really angry really fast and many times it seems like I could explode and become pretty violent. although I know my limits, other don't. This is the biggest reason I started doing all our grooming myself, long before we got a showgirl. I have absolutely no patience for people who don't listen or worse yet, just plow ahead without conferring with the owner. That happened to me once. They claimed our Bentley was 'too matted to brush out', so they shaved him. That was the day we bought a $135.00 Andis trimmer and never looked back. Our girls have learned to like it as it's an hour or more of face time with me and i try to make it as fun as I can with treats! Vance |
I use scissors on my hands and knees on the floor as have never had a grooming table though the outdoors picnic table is about the right height for me and wide enough to lay and roll over on. All our furboys have been scared and run away from electric clippers.x |
Allyson, I was amazed by how quiet my Andis clippers were. Sure they buzz, but they're way quieter than even my Wahl that I use on my own beard! Patience and making it fun for the dog are the keys though... If you get frustrated, it's game over as the dog knows it. Vance |
First time I brought out the clippers for Kdog, she gave me the look, "Oh, you use those too? Oh well............" She is by far the easiest dog we've ever had to groom. Previous owner, thank you!! |
Please don't be overly concerned with Jessy's mental health over the grooming incident. Dogs don't have emotions like people do. He's much less likely stressed out by the ordeal than you are. Dogs tend to live in the moment rather than dwelling on things in the past so he's probably forgotten about the time at the groomer. It's unfortunate that it took so long and he definitely wasn't groomed to your specifications. Hair grows back and although it's hard to deal with now, it's a lesson learned on where not to have him groomed. There's no excuse for your dog being made into someone's grooming practice dog. As far as his diarrhea, if the vet checked Jessy over thoroughly he's probably okay. Vets don't need to be OES specialists to remedy most things like this. A diet of boiled chicken and rice should have him back in shape in a few days. Dogs do feed off of their owner's vibes so if you are fretting over Jessy's experience or expressing fears, etc., chances are he senses this and is acting accordingly. I'm just throwing this out there as my current foster dog was surrendered for being fearful and biting several people. His former owner was petrified each time she took him out for a walk, fearing he would bite. In a different home, he's been a completely different dog and behaved beautifully around other dogs and people at the recent Sheepiefest. Dogs don't get emotional but they sure are good at reading our emotions. Take a deep breath, owning an OES does get easier! |
