The dog that belonged to the Spanish nurse diagnosed with Ebola was euthanized by the Spanish government out of abundance of caution. http://abcnews.go.com/Health/ebola-pati ... d=26014974 I've read before that non-primates can harbor the virus without becoming ill. They spread the virus when the urinate, defecate, vomit, drool, etc. They are vectors of the virus. While the authorities here in the U.S. say they're not monitoring animals, or they're not concerned with transmission via animals, I fear that if faced with the same situation, they would do the same here. I pray that they can get this under control so that we don't lose anyone we love, 2 AND 4 legged. Right now I have zero faith in the government and medical community to do so. |

How very very sad! I 100% agree with you! |
In this article posted on CNN.com http://www.cnn.com/2014/10/08/world/eur ... ?hpt=hp_t1 these paragraphs were included in the article: Quote: He was concerned about the couple's dog, named Excalibur, saying that authorities wanted to put it down. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some studies have shown that dogs can carry the virus without showing symptoms. However, human infections to date have not been linked to dogs. About 20 people campaigned Wednesday morning to save the couple's pet, chanting their support outside the apartment block in Madrid where they live. An online petition to save the dog from being killed already has more than 300,000 signatures. "It would be much easier to isolate or quarantine the dog just as they have the victim's husband," the petition states, rather than forcing the couple to lose "one of the family." However, the spokesman for Madrid's regional health authorities told CNN that "despite the protests, the dog will be put down today." I hope this tactic doesn't come to the U.S. Is there any work being done in the veterinary world to address Ebola in animals and, more importantly, our pets? |
And another article in my hometown paper (but an AP article). http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/ ... cart_river |
I'm not scared of much medical stuff, but Ebola is getting closer and closer. There is no cure, there is no containment, there is no detection until the patient is showing signs and by then it's too late. I can easily get political on this but will try not to go there. I have also have no faith in the government because the way to control it is to close borders and that ain't gonna happen. |
Paula, I also do not understand the logic of not allowing people in from affected areas. Doesn't make sense to me. And I would bet this decision cuts across all political affiliations. I really do think the decision was made based on business; what action would have the least impact on businesses. |
Another story on the Spanish dog Excalibur: http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/ebola- ... ow-n221001 Here's a pic of poor Excalibur |
Sadly, Excalibur was euthanized today. http://www.cnn.com/2014/10/08/health/sa ... index.html |
Remember the movies---Outbreak-1995, Contagion-2011, The Crazies-2010, 28 Days Later-2002, “The Andromeda Strain” (1971) – One of the original deadly virus movies. Sadly this is not a movie. I fear it will only get worse and spread more here in the US. |
I'm afraid they're going to come for our pets. |
