School lunchroom memories

Memory Lane..........

For those who are young enough to remember eating in school cafeterias (Unlike my troglodyte DH who matriculated before such fussiness and ate his way thru school with peanut butter sandwiches and apple carried in a brown paper bag ) .......

What were your favorite lunchtime foods? I was trying to remember what we had and did I like it. Probably.... I was hungry. Do you make anything today like the school's recipe? Two I remember NOT liking was the pizza and the "hamburger" which tasted more like oatmeal.

I remember the cafeteria food vividly! It went in stages for me....In elementary school I despised it. Probably because I was forced to eat it! My sweet mom couldn't afford to pack a lunch for me so I was on the "reduced rate" deal. I used to watch the other kids eating Twinkies and Ho-Ho's and wanted one soooo bad! That was before the state kicked in on the health standards so at that point a twinkie was probably healthier than any hamburger they were serving! I'm in my 40's. Then in high school when I was way to cool to eat and my mom was re-married to my dad and I could actually take a lunch I would occasionally take a sandwich and on certain days one being PIZZA day HAHA I would buy lunch because it was great! They also had a great salad bar every day available. All super affordable and the lunch ladies were always so nice. Loved the salad. That pizza can't be duplicated though. I'm sure there is nothing healthy about it and it was square and thin like you should use a fork and knife to eat it. They just stopped having popcorn day at my daughter's elementary due to Michigan's new nutritional guidelines. :( I get it, one of my 3 kids is a tank but taking away that .50 bag of popcorn isn't going to help him out. Setting an example and starting somewhere is necessary I suppose but still sad to kill a tradition I remember from when I was her age.
My grade school didn't have a cafeteria. Everyone walked home for lunch. So my lunch memories are sandwiches (cut on the diagonal and I wanted them cut down the middle), fruit (this is where I developed my hatred of canned pears), and chips. Milk with lunch of course. Watched a bit of Bozo (but never saw the Grand Prize Game) then walked back to school. Sandwiches were bologna, tuna, pb&j, grilled cheese. There was a cafeteria in my high school but I never ate there. Packed a lunch and ate it outside, or walked to the drug store and had Reese Peanut Butter Cups for lunch!
I don't remember much about the high school lunches, nothing special.

I do remember 1st and 2nd grade tho. I went to a one room schoolhouse in our small farming community. One of the neighbors cooked the meals for us and I remember scalloped corn and some beet dish that I hated. I missed recess because it took me forever to get it down. We also got apples once in a while and I hated the skin on those so once again I missed recess.

I was not a picky eater but those few food items just weren't my cup of tea.
Late in elementary we got a cafeteria. Better than steel lunch box and sour smelly thermos. That was for snowy days, other wise it was hoof it home for lunch........Metracal, cottage cheese and diet canned pears......I was a Metracal for Lunch kid trying to lose weight. Bleech!! Hamburgers has a lot of grain and the bun was weird. Pizza had no meat, just cheese and tomato with a thick crust. I don't remember junior high school lunches! I'm completely blank. Didn't do high school either as I was too cool......actually pretty friendless, nobody to sit with and it was easier to pack an apple and eat that for lunch in some quiet corner in the hall or outside. Sometimes I'd also pack a sandwich.

Favorite elementary school meals were: chicken ala king, shephard's pie, and Salisbury steak. I don't think I've made them as an adult but come fall I start thinking about them again. I'm sure they were tasty as a child and I'd be disappointed as an adult. In addition to pizza, I disliked the Friday meals: fish sticks. Mac and cheese was also served on Friday and that wasn't bad. All is funny because 85% of the school was Jewish, no Catholic restrictions needed. The school would have been better off with Kosher menu but that was just our school, not the whole city. If I remember, the spaghetti was also pretty bad but then I didn't care for canned pasta dinners as we'd travel to north Denver for spaghetti every two weeks.

Desserts.....probably fruit cup and an occasional apple crisp with not crisp pastry. Never knew how it got the name.
I was one of the weird kids that liked fish sticks (and I still do!). Fish was a normal part of our diet (and we're not Catholic). We're Swedish and Swedes eat a lot of fish. So fish sticks and mac 'n' cheese is a fine lunch!
OOOOOOMYGOSH The Salisbury steak yesss I remember it and it was coated with some gel like substance! Aww gross! My mom used to feed that to our finicky dachshund at the time - a freezer variety! Yes we too had the fish sticks on Friday's with mac-n-cheese. I didn't eat them from school because I am a bit of a fish stick and mac-n-cheese connoisseur, love them both. I am Catholic. Lots of both still to this day! I can still picture that Salisbury steak...ick. That gel was like what comes out of a cranberry sauce can - just a mold, blob of brown goop. I'm glad I wasn't the only one that was to cool to eat. Funny, I get so mad at my oldest babe when he comes home with a 1/2 empty lunch box! Do you know ALLL of my kids only get between 25-35 minutes to eat and my youngest has to fit a recess in there too!
I never did school dinners in UK. Hubby loved them as they used to get afters. Only time I went being veggie I had mash, peas and cheese pastry, disgusting, never again!
