giving 16 wk old more room.............

is it too soon to give Jessy [16 wk okd pup] more room than the kitchen? He is not using the pee pads, and I have someone coming and walking him every 4 hours while i'm at work. Is this too much freedom at this time
Thank you,Ellen

I'd hesitate especially with a boy dog as their plumbing develops slower than in girls. They may be formed but the controls take time to develop. I've known boys who were close to 9 months old before they could be completely trusted. May yours catch on sooner......but for now, patience.
Thank you for the good advice
Wherever you put him, be sure that nothing within reach can be damaged by a teething puppy. Kitchen cabinets and other furniture are fair game for sharp teeth and sharp nails. :headbang:
I remember those puppy teething days well. Years ago when I had two pups, put in small kitchen with baby gate because I thought crate training was cruel. But I now believe in it. They chewed the molding off of the doorway to the folding doors that hid the washer and dryer. Then they laid against the doors so they came off the runners. And a few corners of the kitchen cabinets. Tore up some of the tile in the floor as well.
Such sweet memories....Bought large crates soon after. They learned to love them and would leave them open when I was home and they would go in there and sleep.
My new puppy Tinsley goes in her kennel when I am not home. But she has chewed a few things when she was younger and I fell asleep on the couch-bottom rungs of chairs and corner of piano bench....She has 3 nylabones lying around the house..But guess I should try to find the "wood" flavored ones....
Like the others have said, I don't worry to much about the potty training and it looks like that is working well for you, I worry more about the destruction they can do. As mentioned the teeth. Years ago, had a puppy who will go unidentified for now, who ripped my couch up while I was gone for only a short time. So now I have two puppies and until about a week ago, my OES Helene is now allowed out of the crate all night and if I leave. She has earned her right to be free. My other puppy Declan, who is an Aussie, still gets crated at night and if I leave the house. Declan is 9 mts and Helene is 8 mts.
