What are your recommendations? Do those traction booties really work? Any other ideas? Some days he is so tired (from anemia and other medical issues) that he doesn't even go eat after trying to get up 3 or 4 times with no success. I can help him up by putting my arms under his stomach, but often when I do that he rolls over for a belly rub instead (his favorite type of petting). BTW, I bought some cheap little socks for human toddlers that have grippers on the bottoms, and they do seem to help; however, the size and shape of them are not optimal for doggies. Please share your wisdom! I await your answers with bated breath |

Have you thought about getting a med/large area rug for the living room or where he sleeps and then get a dog cooling bed to put on it and get him used to just laying in that spot on the large area rug? Since he likes the tile to be cool, the dog cooling bed would help and then maybe the large area rug would help him with the traction. Amazon has some listings for the beds..... K&H Cool Bed III Cooling Dog Bed, seems to have good reviews. Amazon also seems to be cheaper on a lot of things verses petco and petsmart. Hope this gives you some ideas. |
nico would never give up his cool spot on the kitchen tile. after trying many throw rugs, we resolved the problem with a rubber backed tight weaved carpet like commercial store entrances use. he would grab it with front paws and pull/slide himself over to it and get up much more easily. |
Good suggestions, all. We have a cooling bed. It is in my bedroom, and Dock will sleep on it when I go to bed. However, he often moves during the night to go sleep on the nice, cool tile in the kitchen. That's his favorite place to sleep. He often sleeps there during the day. I have a large carpet in the hallway, between the living room (where I hang out a lot) and the kitchen (where Dock likes to hang out). Dock will not lay on it at all. He does follow me all over the house, and chooses to lay wherever there is NOT carpet. Maybe as the weather cools some, this will change. For now, the toddler gripper socks are working. I like the idea of the rubber backed area rug, though. |
How about a small fan in your bedroom placed so it blows on him? I have done that for mine in the summer and they seem to enjoy the extra airflow. Glad to hear the gripper socks are helping. Terribly hot now. The humidity last week made it feel like it was over 100. |
I like the fan idea. I have been turning on the ceiling fans in the kitchen and bedroom where he sleeps, but one especially for him would be great. Besides, I'm getting chilly when I sleep Everywhere we go, I have to take a sweater because I've got the air conditioning on the highest setting for Dock. |
Dock is a lucky boy. We are going through the same issues with Oscar. For the last two years, we covered our hardwood and tile floors with Pro Tect Floor Runners. We installed it upside down, so the felt side is down and the plastic side is up, and affixed it with blue painters tape that we replace every couple of months. It has left no residue on the hardwood, and has made it so much easier for Oscar to get up. And clean up is a breeze! http://www.pro-tect.com/products/floor-protection-pro-tect/floor-protection-runner.html Even with this extra assistance, I just bought a lift harness for Oscar. I did a bunch of research, and this is the one that met his needs. (His back end is incredibly weak, and he is also starting to limp in the front.) Oscar is currently 118 lbs. , - I needed something with handles. (O is hypothyroid, so his levels are being re-evaluated, as this may be contributing to his issues.) Here is the one we purchased. After the fact, I found out it is the one my vet recommends as well. The harness should arrive some time this week. http://helpemup.com/ Hugs to you and Dock. Laurie and Oscar |
Thanks, Laurie. I was looking at the harnesses from the other thread you posted. I don't think we're at the place that we need it yet. The traction slipper/socks are working right now. My floors are laminate, so I'm worried about the tape pulling off the top layer of the laminate. |
Hi Catherine, Use blue painters tape (wide) for your laminate floor. Will hold down the rug nicely and won't adhere to the laminate. We have laminate floors and that is what we use with no problems. Good luck with Dock. Kathie (also a Katherine, but with a K!) |
So sorry that Dock has gone to the Bridge. You did a great job in his short time with you. Our Nelson, who we lost this past April, had similar mobility issues. We had all the slick floors covered in rubber matting. So sad to think back on now... |
