I was waiting and waiting and waiting to try this but nervous of course because washing my bedding takes 3/4 of a day and I so cherish my sleep! Last night I had a migraine and wasn't sleeping - I was doing the laundry, mopping the floor, taking a shower, ironing - you know everything you can do while your kids are sleeping and you can do it without thinking. Steel kept waking up in his crate looking at me like "what the heck lady?" I took him outside once and he walked back in his crate like the sweet boy he is. I started thinking maybe I should try it and I talked myself back out of it and moved on to another chore. Now for all of you who don't believe in sleeping with your hairy children I know why you don't and please know I overcompensate training wise in other ways to prove to them I am still the alpha. So I decided to do it, here I go. First of all, my daughter is in my bed. Skye is in Skye's spot, at the bottom and in a corner. She usually stays for a 1/2 hr or so to tuck me in and then leaves to the bathroom floor where it is cool. Sometimes she comes back, sometimes no. Sonny was snuggled up to my daughter's knee, calf area. I put Steel's leash back on and lifted him to my bed. My bed is very tall, I didn't want him to try and jump off. I was so stinking excited I could have wet myself but I was trying to just be calm because we all know our dogs can read us and it wasn't party time after all. I got in quick and under the covers and he circled once and flopped and then stretched like he was all of a sudden 6 feet long! He rolled over on his back in between my daughter and I. Skye hit the floor. She was all done. Sonny move up to sleep on my head which is a habit of his. Trying to break him of that. Used to be o.k. but with adding Steel, I think it's a no-no and he is pushing it. So I moved him down, all the while Steel is motionless. It's like he was needing a king size bed to sleep all along (yeah right!) He stayed there for about 10 minutes. Then he moved down to the fur blanket at the foot of my bed and ruffed it up and upside down he went again in the opposite direction! Belly up for another 30 minutes or so. Oh my goodness I don't think he could be any cuter and I'm whispering this because I think he is going to make me pay when he hits the teenage years! So the best part - It's 3 something a.m. and he gets up and not so gracefully walks up to my daughter's head - she has very long hair like mine.... and just starts licking her from forehead to chin! Her hair was all over the place he was sucking on that - she was soaked! She was giggling and trying to talk and couldn't because his tongue kept going in her mouth! I finally had to pull him off of her, she said yay does he get to sleep in bed now! Little does she know as soon as school starts she is sleeping in her own bed! I think I may let him slowly start sleeping in my bed the second half of the morning. When school starts it is very chaotic here. My kids go to 3 different schools with 3 different start and end times so he will be in and out of the truck quickly all day being socialized. Even if you oppose doggies sleeping in your bed, I hope you laughed! If not at the fact that my poor mattress is over worked by sheer weight alone but that my daughter got a shower in her sleep! |

Don't feel bad. It made you happy and laugh. I felt guilty leaving Tinsley in her kennel while at work all day. So we snuggle at night. She sleeps beside me with her head on my chest or stomach and usually wake up with a kitty or two with us as well. |
Back in pack days I was calculating weight on bed one night, 700 lbs. So unless you have slats underneath, beds are pretty darn strong. I might add this was a Sleep Comfort and I fully expected to hear a POP! Nope. I now have the high bed and Kdog has climbed up a time or two but decided she's too old for such silliness. She waits until I move the a lower bed and then joins me. Like your dog, 10 minutes then into the bathroom. |

Awww, what a cute story. Charm will hardly lie on the couch with us. Now if we laid on the cool tile with her..... |
Brenda - It's funny you say that because Steel is the same way. He wont snuggle on the couch at all. He will hop up on one by himself if there are no blankets - they are leather. He does the "belly smash." Legs and arms flat out and bare belly on the cool leather. The rest of the time he is on the wood or tile. I thought for sure he would be similar to Skye and want down after a short time and maybe that will be the case when the newness of it all wears off. His crate is the coolest room of the house. I have a blanket over the top to keep it denlike and the edge of it draped over one of the vents so he has his own cooling system. I keep my house cold at night and my bed hot. I read somewhere that is was healthy to sleep that way (for people). He was on top of all the down covers and fur so maybe it was actually cool enough? I don't know - just know I'm loving the closeness and goofy new "tricks" he is coming up with! |
