My biggest concern is he nips at and pulls on clothing. He tries it with Dan, the girls, and me, and he's always met with a very firm no followed by either a tap on the nose, or his lower jaw being grasped and told to drop. But its the boy that presents the problem. Andy just doesn't stop with Nate. This weekend, Andy grabbed Nate's shirt and managed to pull him down and drag him while pulling on the shirt. Nate said he hit him on the nose, and he said no, but Andy wouldn't stop. In the end, Nate realized that the dog wasn't going to stop, and he slipped out of the shirt which Andy ripped up and pranced around the yard with. Nate came away with some bruises and scrapes. Nate had gone outside for something, and Andy was out by himself. (It was one of those moments where no one thought about Nate being alone with the new dog. ) We have a problem. I have an almost 7-year-old that weighs 60 pounds and a 14-month-old dog that weighs 50 pounds. I honestly don't think this was an aggressive behavior, I think he wanted to play. The game was just completely inappropriate. We now have Andy on a house leash inside the house. We do take it off when he is outside with just Opal or by himself. Nate isn't allowed outside with Andy unless Andy is on leash and controlled by someone else. Nate and Andy aren't allowed to be alone in the house either. This means that I'm not leaving kids at home while I run errands (which I really enjoyed that I could leave the oldest in charge of that), and I'm taking the dog out with me when I putter around outside. Pretty much Andy is now my best friend and next to me all of the time. How do I quickly stop Andy's desire to nip and bite at clothing? How do I train Nate with this dog? Is this something I should call in the trainer for? |
