I also noticed that there was a streak of red thru the mucous. I threw him in the tub & cleaned him up. I then trimmed the fur around his bum. He's not acting any different, he ate fine this morning, his drinking isn't any different. My thought is to monitor him for the next day or so to see if it resolves itself. If not, I'll take him to the vet. My initial reaction was to take him to the ER, but then I thought I shouldn't be running there every time he sneezes. I'll probably give him rice & chicken for dinner tonight. Is this the right course of action for today? |

I'm starting to think he might have an anal gland infection or impaction. I just noticed a small mucousy discharge on the floor where he was lying. It was tinged red. Plus that same substance was all around his bum. This was AFTER I cleaned him up earlier. So I cleaned him up again. It doesn't seem to stink like anal secretions. It doesn't seem to smell at all. Vet tomorrow or ER today? |
If he's not in distress, I'd wait until tomorrow. No food today, just water. Any chance of parasites? |
He's on Heartguard. Can they still get worms while on the preventative? And he doesn't leave my property. |
So I was cleaning him up again just now and I noticed two bumps just north of his bum hole; actually on the outer perimeter at the 12 o'clock position. One bump is larger than the other. I took a picture. Give me a little bit & I'll post it. Could these be cysts that are leaking? The discharge color seems more like clear/faint light brown with a very slight hint of red. And it doesn't smell at all. |
Here's a pic (sorry if it's graphic; I figure dog people understand) I've circled the 2 bumps. Seems like the mucous is coming from this region. And actually, it looks a little raw ALL around his bum hole. |
I can't help. Sorry. Poor brickel. Can it be infected anal glands? |
Carol, I suppose it could be. But I would think that if it was anal glands, the issue would be at the 5 & 7 o'clock position and the excretion would stink. His issue appears to be at the 12 o'clock position and the mucous doesn't stink. |
Unless Brick's starts to exhibit pain or discomfort, I would wait till tomorrow and take him into the vet....Gentle Kisses for the Brickster!!!! poor boy...... |
Good luck tomorrow, let us know how it goes. |
This probably won't help Brick, but yes they can get parasites while on heart worm medicine. When we get loose poop with mucous around here my first action is to restrict food. Next I will try a dewormer, like panacur. We live in a townhouse complex, so Izzie and Tay always walk on leash but often walk and sniff where other dogs and wild animals have been. I always watch carefully to avoid dehydration but we usually don't need a vet visit. |
Don't worry, we have sheepdogs and have dealt with far worse at the south pole. Any chance of a grass awn getting up in there? Some foreign object working it's way in? Is the area tender? Well, I'm no vet, will be curious to hear what the professionals think. |
Poor Brick. No advice, just hope its an impacted gland or cyst draining. Drainage is good. Gentle hugs and kisses for lil Bricky |
cyst Not like what we had on Glacier but there was oooey and gooey from it.........a lot as it was baseball size and we had a lot of maintenance on it trying to keep it clean and bandaged. |
We got back from the vet's almost 2 hours ago. Vet did a general exam & rectal exam. Nothing out of the ordinary noted, other than the mucous. Checked for parasites & found none. Diagnosis = gastro enteritis She prescribed Flagyl twice a day for the next 5 days and a bland diet (chicken & rice) for the next few days. If it doesn't clear up while on the meds OR it comes back after finishing the meds, we'll start looking at other causes. She's confident that it's just the gastro enteritis. She said the mucous was just leaking out of his anus. He ate about 7 ounces of the special food they gave me when we came home and promptly pooped. There was a few squirts/drips of liquid at first, and then mostly firm poop after that. So that looks encouraging. I cleaned him up and then went to work. Hopefully he'll still be clean & dry when I come home. Thanks to all for their advice & caring. We appreciate it. |
Heat and humidity, increased exercise, something he ate or drank can all contribute. Glad he got a good report. |
Keep in mind Slippery Elm Bark capsules. It is a natural goo ......I know the work is something like mucasoid...but not sure of spelling. Anyway, it coats the gut to help with irritation. I give it to the dogs when they got .........well, you know. |
Fed him rice and some of the special vet food tonight. Gobbled it right up. |
Glad to hear brick is ok. That's good he is hungry. Hope he continues getting better |
good boy Brick.....huggs |
