Bad storms yesterday. Rare tornado touched down.

We had some quick, but bad storms roll thru here yesterday afternoon. About 5:30 - 7:00 PM EDT, depending on your location.
For us, it was sunny, then cloudy, then windy, then the rain started, then the wind & rain really picked up, then it died off pretty quickly, then the sun came out. All in a span of about 20-30 minutes. After the storm was leaving the immediate area, the power went out. It was out for 3 hours.

Just a little (45 mins) east-southeast of us, it was confirmed that a tornado touched down in the town of Smithfield and destroyed 4 homes. 4 people have been confirmed dead. These kinds of things don't happen around here. This may be the most powerful tornado in New york State since 1950; and the most deadly tornado ever in NYS.

We made the national news. ABC did a piece on us this morning on GMA. CNN & NBC are running stories on their websites.

Other areas of CNY got hit pretty hard, too. East Syracuse is under a state of emergency. Oswego took some pretty good damage.

We didn't receive any damage in my village. As a matter of fact, I was surprised how quick it came & went. Barely any thunder or lightning. Bricky didn't even seem to do too bad. He was hiding in the basement bathroom, but he came up rather shortly after the storm ended.

When I was reading about it thought about you and realized, not in your immediate back yard, Phew! Also have friends up in Saranac Lake, far from them as well.

You pretty much described a typical storm here; hit hard and fast and gone! Rare to have rain over 20 minutes. Last week we got over 3 inches rain in 4 days. 3 isolated storms sat on top of us, rest of the area remains dry. I am not complaining.
National Weather Service says it was a strong EF-2 tornado with winds around 125 mph.

Another tornado was confirmed in Lewis County and another in Oneida County.

So strange. We don't get weather like this here. People aren't prepared for stuff like this. We don't have tornado sirens. Nor do people pay attention to tornado watches & warnings because we don't get them.
EF2 is note worthy. No, you do not live in tornado alley and people are not as aware of storms as say people in Kansas, etc. But this is the time of year for such storms to be northern.......spring and fall...........and winter they are more down south.

Up until today, I would have agreed with you Susan. But our weather people are saying that it's more uncommon to see a tornado up here in the middle of summer than it is in late spring/early summer.

So everything about this storm was unusual. BTW, the NWS has now confirmed 4 tornadoes and 3 microbursts.
Our best local meteorologist, who has been around for years, had this to say:

"Yesterday was by far, the biggest extreme weather day in CNY since the Labor Day Derecho in 1998. What is creepy is that we now have had 4 confirmed tornado touchdowns in CNY in a day. Climatalogically, this is not only unusual, but seasonally, I believe this is out of place. Not at all typical for the second week in July."
Actually, in southern tornado alley where I live, the season is April to October. And I grew up near Moore, Oklahoma, the tornado capital of the World.

The joke, which is mostly true, that a tornado warning means it's time to climb on the roof and film the tornado going by. We all can recognize a hook echo - and know what it means. The same goes for a wall cloud.

My daughter was on the west coast when they got a few tornados. She was laughing at the weather guys who knew less about the weather than she did.
True, you can get them spring, summer and fall, aren't you lucky! Those Calif. guys and gals should brush up, there are quite a few funnels in Calif, they just don't make it to the ground.

What I was trying to say quickly is various parts of the country have their "season": There is a general northward shift in "tornado season" in the U. S. from late winter through mid summer. The peak period for tornadoes in the southern plains is during May into early June. On the Gulf coast, it is earlier during the spring; in the northern plains and upper Midwest. I realize upper New York isn't considered Midwest so yes, this tornado was unusual but not unheard of.

As the northern area cools during the fall, the major tornado activity drops back down to the south. Tornadoes can happen any day or night of the year. Indeed, the earliest on modern record (since 1950) was two minutes into the new year--12:02 a.m. CST, 1 January 2011, in Attala County, MS. The average first-tornado date in the U. S. is January 11, for the entire 1950-2011 time frame.

I used to think living in the high Rockies was a safe place to be to avoid tornados. Ha! On 7 July 2004, a hiker observed and photographed a tornado at 12,000 feet in Sequoia National Park, California. On 28 July 2012, a tornado moved across ground elevations of around 11,900 feet, along the flank of Mt. Evans, CO. On 21 July 1987, there was a violent (F4 damage) tornado in Wyoming between 8,500 and 10,000 feet in elevation. Reason we hear less about them is there aren't as many people to report them.
Saw on the news yesterday all of the damage in that area. I have spent plenty of time in Madison County. Riding in Brookfield and antiquing in Bouckville. My aunt who lives just outside of Utica also had no power for a while. Weather has been crazy this year. What are we doing to the environment!!!!
Katie, today we have more people on the planet to see the storms and more "targets" for the storms' destruction so it seems like more storms.
I saw it on the news and weather channel.
I don't live anywhere near where I can hear tornado sirens. It's that way for most of us in the midwest....you just need to be educated and pay attention to the weather. ;) ...and that's something the midwesterners are known for - being very in tune with the weather and our outdoor surroundings.
We don't even have tornado sirens. Never needed them.

The paper did an update on the mother & daughter that died. She was 34, her daughter was 4 months.
The woman's fiance shared her last text with the paper.

He texted her to keep an eye out for the weather, as it was looking not good. She responded that the skies were getting dark and that the power was out, so she & the baby were going to take a nap. That was her last text.
I've come home from work to see news that there was a tornado in Perth on Australia's west coast today.
Thing is Perth doesn't get tornados. One article said the weather people got a wind specialist to confirm it was a tornado.
Lets hope it's a long, long time to next tornado where you live.......happy we don't have them here in Norway.
We do have lots of bad weather though, nothing much to do about it.
