Recently we've noticed our three-and-a-half year old female sheepdog developing dark blackish spots on her skin. (We can see the spots through her hair when it's wet, particularly on her face.) Is this a normal part of the aging process or should we be concerned? Otherwise she is a very happy, healthy sheepie with good energy, appetite and that classic big OES grin! Thanks for your advice! Perfectly normal. The skin on OES is mottled, also check inside the mouth, you'll see dark areas appearing there if they haven't already. This is normal pigmentation, some start early, others delay this. Just as they are born with pink noses that turn black, so too their skin becomes mottled and eventually even their toe nails can turn dark. If your pup ever has a wound on the skin, a cut for example, the wound hair will come in black and eventually be replaced by normal colored hair, grey or white. |
