Weight pull- Chewie and Bond

Thanks to the benevolent scheduling gods, I was off work on Sunday. It was my regular weekend to work, but they put one of our part-time nurses on Sunday instead of me! :D

Our weight pull group was having a pull on Saturday and Sunday, and being hosted at the farm of a couple who raises Malamutes. Tim and Karina are both vets, and they have a beautiful farm. The weather was our best day yet this spring in MN. It was in the mid 70's, sunny and a strong wind. Tim and Karina's place is about 1 hr 45 minutes from me, but such a beautiful drive through the farmland between our houses. :)

Here is the pull setup:

UKC weight pulls have weight class for every 10 pounds of dogs, including a class for the "littles" - dogs under 20 pounds. We had Papillons, Chinese Cresteds and Klee Kai's in that class.

Chewie weighed in at 75 pounds, and Bond at 83 pounds - so they were each in a separate class.

Chewie's 80# class (dogs 71-80#) was 2 dogs - he and a nice pulling american bulldog named Opey.
Chewie did really well - he pulled 1750# and that was 23.33% - or 23.33 times his weight. That earned him 10 points toward his UWPCHX - Weight pull champion excellent. :clappurple: He also outpulled Opey for 1st in his class - but placings aren't awarded anymore. Everyone is just going for personal bests and points. Chewie has been pulling for about 5 years - he's an old pro at this!

Here is Chewie in one of his rounds. The cart weighs 310# and each block is 30#.

This was Bond's 4th pull. He got his 1st basic title of UWP at the last pull. All they need to do for the UWP is pull 8 times their weight in 3 weight pulls. Bond did his 3rd pull earlier this spring, and pulled a nice 1910# . Way exceeding his 8x's!
I was optimistic he would do well, as at the last one he was really into it and getting excited. :crossed:

He did great! He pulled 2110#, for 25.42% , or 25.42 times his weight. :yay: That puts him in the 1 ton club!! :excited: (Chewie is too).
Being at 25% bumped him to getting 15 points, and you don't get 20 points until 35% (which several dogs did - mostly the smaller breeds, it's just easier for them). So I did a handler withdrawal after the 2110# pull. He really was working it, and I wanted to stop with him confident and happy. :D He was in the 90# class (81-90# dogs) with his buddy Wruckus, a Malamute (also a show dog, and sledding dog). Bond beat out Wruckus for 1st in his class also. Bond got his 1st 15 points toward his Weight Pull Champion title- you need 100 points, so we have a ways to go. ;)

Here are some pics at almost his max pull-
Startline - handlers get crazy...lol I was focusing him on the ground, to lean in and pull.

(Oh, and see the girl in the black T laughing - that's Mel, the one we got our Maggie from. She pulls with her blueticks too!)

and then partway in the pull -

Another round - start:

and caught in mid-bounce at the finish line of the pull.
He is a very enthusiastic puller!

We had such a good time. We do a potluck (oh yum!) and chat with our friends, getting caught up on all the other stuff we do with our dogs. We have a diverse group. Breeds pulling yesterday were: Papillon, Klee Kai, Chinese Crested, Border Collie, Blue Tick Coonhound, Pit Bull, American Bulldog, Samoyed, Standard Poodle, Siberian Husky, Malamute, several mixed breeds, Saint Bernard...and OES! :roses: :roses:

And here is a video of one of Bond's middle rounds pulling -

Sounds (and looks!) like it was a perfect day for pulling! The boys look great!
Awesome! :high5: :high5: Great job Chewie and Bond!

Cindy
Thanks guys! Seriously, I love, LOVE all the stuff we can do.

The OET came this week, and Bond is in the Top Twenty for conformation! I was hoping this would happen when he was 3, not just a 2 yr old. Then yesterday, Bond's 2 title certificates from AKC came in the mail - for BN obedience, and RN rally.

Today is the one year anniversary of the Moore, OK tornado, where Chewie and I went for a week and volunteered with our TDI - DSR teams - Disaster Stress Relief. I'm being overwhelmed with memories of how our dogs just gave and gave of themselves.

They are my buddies, and teammates, and we have such a good time. :)
