I think they're playing but...

Someone is going to get seriously hurt. Amy is "playing" with our blender of a cat. Kyanite is one of those cats that kills things regularly. He kills big things like baby foxes, weasels, and rabbits as well as the little things like mice and voles. 8O For some reason Amy thinks she needs to chase him. He doesn't run, he always stands his ground. So Amy's nose and forehead look like she's been in a knife fight.

Amy has annoyed the cat enough that he will now lay in wait for her, by sitting on the false walls and jumping the 10 feet onto her as she walks by. I can tell her to "leave it" but the damage is already done. Kyanite is not going to forget that Amy chased him, and Amy charges him every chance she gets. If Amy actually does make contact before the cat, she could hurt him. I'm worried about him seriously injuring her eyes.

Plus, dripping blood on the carpet, claw marks on the walls where the cat climbs them to get to his vantage points, peel out marks on the leather sofa... this is not a good thing.

I'm not sure why Amy came home from board-and-train with less respect for our cat. She was pretty good about leaving him alone before she went. Unless its a jealousy issue of some kind. Opal and Kyanite get along really well and you can find them cuddled up to one another occasionally. They were like that before though, so I'm not understanding why it would be any different.

What on earth am I going to do?

File under things no one else in the world wants: neurotic sheepdogs, psychotic cats.

No advice about what to do as I haven't solved the problem here.

Rowdy siamese cat sleeps all snuggled up with my dalmo but Tiggy MUST chase him. The saving grace here is Tiggy is in full coat so there is buffer from the cat claws but I worry about her eyes. I have a baby gate that the cat jumps in order to leave Tiggy behind and some cat friendly vantage points.

I think if Tiggy were shaved I'd be in trouble. I have sprung naff cat flinging himself at Tiggy's legs and clawing and biting at her. She just stands and stares at him, she can't feel it because of her coat, so she doesn't get it. Rowdy walks away feeling very disgruntled as he's done his worst and it was water off a ducks back.
Hi,

Having two sheepies and several cats my advise is as follows:
If Kyanite lets you clip has nails I would do that immediately and regularly (once a week). This takes the sharp tip off that does all the damage!
If Kyanite is laying in wait for Amy, discourage this behavior with either a water gun or spray bottle set to stream. As soon as he makes his move toward Amy squirt him! Cats generally do not like water in their faces and the undesired behavior ends within a day or so.
Keep working with Amy on the "leave it" command. She will also eventually "get it".

I also live with two neurotic rescue sheepies and at one point had a psycho rescue Abyssinian cat in the mix. Life is always interesting here!

Regarding Amy acting differently to the cat since she was away for "training". You don't really know what Amy encountered in her "sleep away training camp" so she may have had to defend herself from dogs she didn't know or other animals. You just never know. It takes a little time for them, when they return home to get back in the groove of home.
I kind of wonder if it was the weather too. We went from gorgeous to rainy. I know that irritates the cat and he acts out a little more indoors when we have a rainy night and he doesn't stay outside as long as usual. I didn't think of this yesterday when furballs were flying off the walls and large creatures were bounding down the hall. Last night was drier and he was out longer. Today he's sleeping on a bookcase and Amy has had more time to play outside.
We used to try to clip Kyanite's nails. It was kind of like sticking your hand into a running blender, so we've stopped that madness and we know he has the equipment to defend himself outside. Usually he's ok with not trying to assassinate anything that resides inside. And normally he takes a more circuitous route to the top of the walls so he has a chance to get up and away from everything. Why he decided sheetrock was for climbing, I don't know. Ky also isn't bothered by a stream of water in the face.

You would think that our lives are horrible with this cat, but he's really quite loving and tolerant of most things we do to him. He's a Pixie-bob which is one of those cat breeds with a story about how a house cat mated with a bob cat to create this super breed.
An update to this. Kyanite won. A few days ago, I heard yelping and carrying on outdoors and went to check. Kyanite was on the patio table glaring at the dogs and they were both cowering on the ground. Amy had some pretty good scratched on her shoulders and chest. Now its back to the usual behavior of the cat walks by, curious dogs watch from a distance. Outdoors, the cat does whatever he wants and the dogs ignore him.

This was definitely a problem I wouldn't have thought to watch for when the dogs returned from boarding out.
That is half the problem-you just don't know what the dogs had to handle whilst away and maybe the cat thought "great they have gone" but they came back so he is more "cross" with them.x
