I've tried to ignore it - did not work, I've tried to shame him verbally - did not work, I've tried punishing him (with my hand or a slipper) - did not work at all. I am at a loss. Any suggestions? thanks |

If he knows he's doing wrong, punishing him more is wrong. How old is he? Boys don't gail full control for many many months. In fact my 2 year old still had trouble turning it off if he's been distracted. So leash him up over tile and keep a towel handy......even underneath. Reward him for doing is job outside.
I suspect it's a combination of full bladder, young dog and excitement. Give the poor guy a break! Even human babies aren't completely dry for years. s. |
It can be so frustrating when they go potty in the house, even when housebroken. My neighbor had a dog with a similar problem, and it turned out to be submissive urination. Basically, the dog is using urine to tell you that you are the dominant one, and he is not understanding your responses as everything you do when he urinates reinforces your dominance, when all he's trying to do is communicate your role as leader of the pack. Because it occurs around the leash, he might have some anxiety surrounding that.
Anyway, there is a great article on hilltopanimalhospital.com that outlines this issue, as well as ways to deal with the behavior. Some of they things they mention to diffuse the submission are remaining calm, using treats, as well as greeting the dog crouching down rather than towering over him. You might want to crouch down near him with the leash and a handful of Richi's favorite treats. Let him come to you, and praise him quietly and calmly, giving him treats while you put on the leash. Just a thought. Hope this is helpful and good luck with Richi. |
