Our youngest, Caitlyn, is like that. Many times I have to go down on the lower deck where she prefers to lay and GET her. Occassionally, she'll flat ignore my calls for her. Zoey, our older Sheepie, is only like this when it was really cold outside. We've just learned to live with it... This is the two when it was like -16F... Vance |
Oh wow! Aren't they funny?! -16 degrees! Our guy was out in the winter often but it wasn't below zero..20s-30s. I'm sitting here writing this message on our first real day of spring, about 65 degrees, he has been outside almost the whole day ... Playing and laying in the shade! Doesn't want to come in! |
not all sheepies are Velcro 24/7, some can't hear you when in the outside mode as vance has shown. don't tell everybody, but they can be stubborn whether layin in the snow or shading in the hot weather |
His behavior really isn't unusual. All of my dogs, and now even the puppies like to be outside most days. We have a doggy door, so they come and go as they please. When the 3 older dogs were here, through the winter and into the Spring they would spend most of their time outside. Once it started getting to warm out, they would come into the a/c. I've noticed the pups are doing the same thing. When we get up between 5/6 in the morning, I take them right out to potty and it's not unusual for them to stay outside and wrestle and play. Most of the time they like to lay and listen to what is going on. That is the reason we put up a fence that the dogs can see through, since we live in the country. China used to love to lay in the backyard and just listen and look around. With your pup, I was also thinking that maybe the breeder used to sit outside at night with them. You never know, and it can become a habit. I know that Helene's breeder told me that the litter would wake up at 10:00 at night and play for two hours and than about 2:00 and do the same thing. Helene did keep up that habit for a little while, but now she's much better and both go out at 1:00 am than go back to sleep or entertain themselves in their crates until 5/6.. |
Yes, I've had some insist on going out at night.....and not just for a "last call." Cool air, new smells, night time animals, dog's privacy time......who knows. Some I'd just let stay outside at night, but we are fenced and locked up. Dogs would sleep on the porch....probably waiting for a cat to come sneaking in.......especially the one with the white stripe! Only got that one once.........and I was not pleased to be giving dog baths at 11 pm. Dogs are somewhat nocturnal, we teach them night is for sleeping. Otherwise they'd napped a bit and then prowl. Sounds like yours is still in wild mode. Relax, just encourage him back in with a tasty treat. |
Yes I do not think its unusual either. I just know that are past three sheepies did not go outside nearly as much as Dudley does. We were also thinking the same as you in regards to our breeder letting the dogs out to play often. She lives on a farm with about 8 sheepies, and Dudley's litter mates which was 6 pups. I know when we visited they were loving the outside. |
They are Sheep Dogs after all and those sheep need looking after at night too! Now the rain has taken a break here! we have the side door open and Archie is outside all the time - unless chasing our cats in the house that is! Quite normal healthy behaviour. |
Both my sheepie and collie like to lay outside at night. I think it bespeaks their breeds, as the collie will trot the fence line first, and the sheepie will find a good spot to lay where she can see the whole yard. Its interesting behavior, if not annoying, at 2 am. |
Zeke spends as little time outside as possible. I let him out, he does his business, and runs right back in. If I'm outside, he'll run to the door and just sit there, looking like Sam from the Looney Toons cartoons. |
Mine are always warm, so they look for the coolest spots. It was pretty funny last year when the warm weather came and Bond finally realized that the house with AC on was a better choice than outside! |
In, out, in, out, in, out, it drives my husband crazy! |
You have pretty much described Cody. We could spend an house in the dog park playing in -16 weather and he won't want to come inside when we get back to the house. We usually tie him up on his long line on the front lawn and he will stay out there hanging out on the snowbank for another hour- and this is all before he has eaten breakfast! |
Our previous dog Fred would stay out in all weathers if we allowed him to. He nearly got frost bite on his dangles-had licked and then on cold concreat next to warm bed.x |
