Movies! Movie Reviews, Movie Rants, Movie Raves

Forget about Harry Potter!! The greatest children's book of all time is once again a movie starting this Friday, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"!! Tim Burton & Johnny Depp - way big bonus!!

btw - you Star Wars fans that may have been disappointed this year with the sub par acting, be sure to check out "War of the Worlds" if you already haven't. Best Hollywood style movie I've seen in a long, long time.

I love Charlie & The Chocolate factory, but the movie looks a little too Tim Burton for the story. Then again we're talking Johnny Depp . . . .
Yes, but I think if were done by anyone else I don't think I would go to see it. Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka is the greatest. So at least Johnny Depp being a more twisted Wonka won't shatter that image for me.
Sometimes I ask myself (and sometimes I ask it of Joan, out loud) what part of the Chocolate Factory story hadn't been told, that they needed to do a re-make?

Gene Wilder was perfect in the role. Unless this thing gets rave reviews (which, based on the incredibly un-funny commercials so far) I won't be seeing it.

I was thinking about going to see the "Hitchhiker's Guide" but...

Oh wait. I haven't been to a movie theater in years. Why the heck would I want to go to a room with a screen smaller than most people's home theaters, sit near people unwrapping candy bars and digging into their popcorn buckets, and worst of all TALKING (ON A PHONE OR TO THEIR FRIEND) DURING THE DARN MOVIE????

THEY ACTUALLY ARE PERPLEXED WHY THE MOVIE BUSINESS IS DOWN?

Give me a break. Theaters will not all go away immediately, but neither did the drive-ins.
One word Ron.......www.Netflix.com
Hey Ron, how do you really feel??!! 8O

Some of us have only a teeney tiny 13 inch TV, with bad sound that squeezes onto a computer desk next to my 19 inch monitor, and I have yet to buy a DVD player. When we go to an actual movie theater we only go to the ones with the best surround sound, and go on off peak hours so we don't have people talking or chewing in our ears so it's actual a pretty pleasant experience unless the movie is a stinker.
Better word:

Real life... (and oes.org)

LOL ok, maybe it was a phrase.

I don't have the inclination anymore to spend time watching movies. There's a couple I'd love to see, but I'll be darned if I'm going to subject myself to that unpleasant experience. There is, however an "over 21 only" Premium Cinema about 10 miles from here. They charge 2x the ticket price (used to be $15 a couple of years ago under General Cinema, then they closed, but I've hear they've re-opened)... first class-like reclining leather seats, free popcorn, liquor service... now THAT'S the way to see a movie!

Hey, at one point in our lives, we owned (ok we still own it) a very (VERY) expensive Laser Disc player, and maybe 40 VERY expensive Laser Discs.

The picture quality of an LD is much better than the quality a DVD is capable is producing. Of course it's completely obsolete now....

Maybe someday I'll hook it up to a TV or monitor, just for fun. My first Disc, "Indiana Jones and the Final Crusade" was a blast!
Ha ha, hey maybe I should be in a chat room. My ex was very big into having the "first" of everything electronic and we too had a laser disk player but I left that with him when we got divorced (I got the sheepdog!).
My laser disc player played both sides of the disc without having to turn it over!
Hey Ron! Don't waste your money on Hitchhikers Guide! I saw it when it
first came out - I give it a big thumbs down.

I am a big reader, can't wait for HP on saturday. The last one I read in the
hospital when Gabe was born. Did I ever mention how much I hate the
hospital? I broke out after about 48 hours. Actually I begged and they did let me go, as opposed to the time before when
I really DID break out

I don't really think the new Charlie & the Chocolate Factory looks too good. Leave it to Tim Burton to really twist things out of kilter. Although
Depp does look cleaner than I've seen him in a while. But then again,
with a face like that who cares if he's had a shower. I'd take him either
way.

Can't say I have any movies to look forward to - but then I guess I am
out of the loop. Seems like good movies come in waves just like good
music.

Any suggestions?

Shellie
Did anyone see Johnny Depp on Leno last night? Is it me, or does it sound like he's developing an Irish accent? I could understand maybe a French one, since he lives in France, but it doesn't sound French to me...

I have heard only good things about Hitchhiker's Guide...(haven't seen it myself).
I have heard great things about Batman...(haven't seen it myself).
I can't imagine Willy Wonka being any good.

I really should go see some movies, though...My student ID card expires next month, but I guess it doesn't matter because Virginia doesn't seem to have student discounts
I saw Batman on IMAX. It was really pretty good. Not overdone with special effects. I have to say, I love Tim Burton and can't wait to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I've been looking forward to it for a long time. What I'd reallly like to see is Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator get made...[/b]
I would love to see some of the movies in an imax theater... we don;t have one though in town.
I cannot stand Johnny Depp, in anything. Edward Scissorhands was cool though, I do like Tim Burton's style.... and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory was one of my favorite movies.... so I will probably see it. I wouldn't pay to see it in the theater though, I'll wait, a month after theater it will be on Video On Demand... good enough for me.
Recently I watched Lara Croft~ The Cradle Of Life, and thought it was amazing, as well as Beyond Borders, another Jolie movie, that was AMAZING. The writing, directing, acting, it all comes together in that one seamlessly. I can't wait to see Mr. and Mrs. Smith with Jolie and Pitt, even though I'm not a Brad Pitt fan....
I also love anything with Adam Sandler, so even though I hate football I'm looking forward to his new one.
I LOVE that hysterical hairdo, VerveUp!!! HAHAHAHA ...that's awesome, and would give that to yuki in a heartbeat if I felt confident in doing it!!!!!!

Cursed - (rental) ...[was really bad]. We just grabbed it because we were in a hurry ...unaware it was about werewolves. You can figure out the "killer" the first few minutes of the film. 2 paws DOWn.

We saw MR&MRs. Smith - it was a great plot and so intriguing to see Brad and Angelina together. You FELT the chemistry. However, the movie WAS not that great. WAY too much action. Even my husband agrees (big on mostly action movies).... not enough dialog/story. Apparently the critics said the same thing.
Hostage (rental) - with Bruce Willis. I thought it was going to be boring like Panic Room, but it was very good.

Saw Vin Diesal Pacifier thinking it would be like Kindergarten Cop or something cute.... WAY too disney. Very Blaghhhh.

Looked to see what other movies we saw that are on the new release section: and we were also disappointed in Coach Carter. It was definitely a good movie, but were disappointed it could not sit next to movies just like it. Rudy and the other movies top this one.

We're currently renting Hide n Seek w/Dakota Fanning, but we haven't watched it yet.
Yeah!! We've heard great things about Batman also. Sadly, everytime we go to the movies it's for Madagascar, or Robots, or something like that. We've had a really hard time finding a babysitter. We moved here recently so kids are always with us!! Oh, well - I do do a lot of pay per view. Watched Secret Window last night with Johnny Depp. Good stuff! I love suspense! :)
I watched Secret Window last July and liked it as well (and I HATE J.Depp).
I hear ya on the babysitter thing, and movies being so expensive to see...in reality it can end up being a $100 to go out one night.

1 1/2 hours to wait in line and see the Star Wars movie cost us:

$24/2 tickets (matinee)
$15...popcorn, M&Ms, pop
$5...coffee we had waiting

babysitter hired from 1 pm-6 pm...$30

$30 for Pizza ordered for supper because we couldn't go out after the movie, since the first show was already filled and we waited for the second one to start...they had it starting every hour.

SOOOOOOOO we only go if the movie will be "worth" it, otherwise we wait for DVD, or maybe the dollar theatre, esp for cartoons, the kids love the movie experince too.

As for irratating people, not too bad here, they have security inside the studio while we watch to keep tabs on things. Generally everyone has been good the last times we went out.
The best rental that we have seen was Kill Bill 1 and 2....over the top and yes, there was violence, but it was so far fetched that it wasnt gross!! If you rent one you must rent the other!! I had to race back to the rental place to get 2, I couldnt wait!!!

I also want to go see war of the worlds....It looks fantastic, even though Tom Cruise is in it!
Ohhh yeah!! I pay per viewed "Kill Bill 1" right when the 2nd one was coming out in the theatre and I wanted to run right out to see it. Of course I didn't because we didn't have a babysitter - but I did finally see it. Very cool movies!

Karen
I haven't seen a movie in sooo long. Last time we tried was Madagascar, in which I spent over a hour walking my 2.5 yr old son around the parking lot because he was screaming his lead off! It will be a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time before we try a movie again!

Our tv is now stuck on Noggin when it is on, with a few mins of Fox News while the kiddos are sleeping.

I love Charlie & the Chocolate Factory - I've read the book to my sons several times. I like the original movie, but I'm not sure about this one... I'll probably rent it on DVD because the kids do like the book.

I'm more of a reader...that's what I do in my spare time, or visit this forum. :)
Okay, apparently I'm the only freak going to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the day that it comes out. I am so ashamed to say that I already have my tickets for the 2:30 showing tomorrow.
The upside is that I'm going with a friend whose favorite actor is Johnny Depp and it's her birthday so I can blame it on her. We're also going to see it in Imax so if nothing else the giant screen should be cool. I've also heard that this movie adaptation is closer to the book so no bubbly soda and such. I'm a huge fan of the book and the original movie so we'll see if I come back sufficiently bitter tomorrow!

We went to the theater to see Secret Window and I had no idea it was a Stephen King story. When the opening credits rolled it said based on the short story by Stephen King, to which I proclaimed, "Hey, I've read that!" Color me stupid. I must say the movie ending was much better and I hadn't liked any of the King adaptations so far. Kudos to Secret Window people!
Hey Ron, we had a Laser Disc player when I worked in the Psych Lab at college. Nothing like seeing the Milgram experiment big as life and in perfect clarity!
That's the one with the fake electric shocks, seeing if people would hurt others for no reason other than they were "following orders."

(I had to look it up lol )
You got it!
Saw Star Wars, last 20 minutes was good, otherwise just "ehh".
Saw War of the Worlds, and while the effects were good, I also think it was just "ehh".
Saw the Interpretor with Nicole Kidman---2 thumbs up from me. If you haven't seen it and it's still playing near you, it's a good one.

On my list to see is Wonka, Batman and Dukes. That should do it for the summer.
Saw Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. (2:40pm :D Maxmm) I think I psyched myself up too much and it didn't completely live up to my expectations. But here are the good points Johnny Depp was great, that in it of itself is worth seeing. He was barely recognizable so all of you Depp-haters won't mind it too much. He did play a twisted character but I think Wilder pulled off the mysterious nature better. Squirrel scene alone is worth seeing the movie. Liked the new Ooompa Loompas. Okay, that's it from me on that topic.

War of the worlds is still my favorite summer movie so far.
I went into Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2:30 show, beat you by 10 minutes Verve!) just waiting to hate it but it was actually pretty good. One guy, who's name is Deep Roy :o , plays all of the Oompa Loompas which is fine but they used the digital grader to even out all the repetetive movement and that bugs me. Otherwise it was very cool, followed closer to the book and Christopher Lee plays Willy Wonka's dad! Also liked how they developed the kids characters/personalities. All in all very good and I didn't have to beat up any small kids for talking during the movie, Bonus!
LOL ....
My daughter wants to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, so I might go see it with her.

Another great Jolie movie was on the other night, Taking Lives. WOW. I don't know how I missed that one when it first came out. Absolutely amazing.
As far as Hide n Seek, just coming back to give a review. Husband enjoyed it and thought it kept you guessing. I thought it DRAGGED out in the beginning, led you to believe it's scary (it's not), and it reminds me of another movie. Because I don't want to give it away, I won't say which one.

We're going to a 1:15 showing of Batman Begins.

I'm dying to see WEDDInG CRASHERS!!! I've OnLY heard AWESOME THIngs!!!
Ohh, Hide and Seek isn't scary?!?! I thought it looked scary too - that's the one with Bruce Willis and Dakota Fanning - right? My husband and I are dying to see Wedding Crashers. Anything with Vince Vaughn I am convinced is hysterical. I just had my husband watch Anchorman and Stay Cool this weekend - classic Vince Vaughn!!!!!!! 8)

Karen
My hubbie and I went to see the Wedding Crashers today and it was hysterical! We both said it was the funniest movie we've seen in a long time! I would recommend it for anyone!
