Where are you located in Central OH? |
Couple of things to start you 'off: 1. I prefer a multidog class. This gives your dog a good chance to learn how to behave around other dogs & work around distractions. 2. Train using the praise & reward method. Doesn't mean you can't use the word NO but you emphasis to the dog that when they do as you request there is something in it for them! The harsh jerk & yell "NO" methods when they are doing something wrong just doesn't work with this breed or in my opinion with any breed for that matter. Go observe classes & trainers before you agree to be part of them. It will save you a lot of time & $$$$ in the long run. 3. If at all possible, train with someone who competes in obedience or performance work themselves. Doesn't mean you have to go on to competition but these people know the best & shortest route to getting your dog to listen to you & learn from you. If you live in the Columbus area I would suggest calling the Columbus Dog Training Center. |
i am around east columbus. Thanks for the idea to observe. That is a good thought! Anyone heard of ohio state k9 college? |

I took my first dog to a very highly recommended trainer, and realized very quickly that she was NOT the best one for my (previously abused) dog, or for me. For my second dog, I visited 3 other training classes near me, and was much happier with my next decision. |
Same, as mentioned above. Group classes are best for most dogs and humans. You get the chance to use your fellow classmates as distractions. We don't live in a bubble, so doing privates for basic behavior shouldn't be done in a bubble. And yes, check around, visit a class where you are considering enrolling. I strongly encourage people to do that in my classes. You want a good match for everyone. |
