New Sheepdog Art

Hi all!

I thought I had an old thread on here with my collection of sheepdog art in it. I found a thread that has some of the pieces I have collected, in addition to stuff, but can't find one of just the collection. So I'll start a new one, and hope no one minds.

SO- for those of you that don't know, I collect artwork featuring sheepdogs. It started as commissioned portraits of Tonks & Luna, and has since grown to include all sorts of stuff. Anyway; I got a new piece a couple of weeks ago, and I finally scanned it. It's really large, so I had to scan it in multiple pieces. Once put back together in Photoshop, the edges don't all line up quite right. But I think you have to really look to see the mistakes. ANYWAY: here it is, my latest addition. It's a comic strip (probably a Sunday strip) from an old comic by Robert L Dickey. He did cover illustrations for the Saturday Evening Post and Life, always featuring dogs. He did a couple of cartoon strips, from what I can tell, one called Buster Beans, one called Bucky and his Pals and one called Buddie and his Friends. I think this is one of the latter, and probably from around 1925-1935.

In the research I've done, its the only sheepdog I can seem to find that he drew, I'm sure there must be others, but I'm glad to have stumbled on this one!

Curious how the syntax has changed just enough that it was difficult to read aloud to DH.......or my glasses need cleaning. (better check for Kdog lick)
I love it. Although I'm pretty sure my sheepie wouldn't be quite so understanding of wayward pups.
So, was that considered a "comic" strip?

I thought so; maybe I'm wrong. There wasn't any information with the piece when I bought it.
How cool. I'm sure you check the usual sources of this stuff like eBay and onine antique stores like Ruby Lane. I would have thought the artist was from the UK judging by his use of certains words and expressions like "lads" and "feel a terrible brute." I remember when my mom used to promise us a licking! (she never followed through though)
It definitely reads very "old-timey"! Which is perfect for our decor, as we are slowly re-doing our home in the Craftsman Bungalow style! None of the rest of my sheepdog art really matches what we are going for, but that's ok- they're sheepdogs, and that's good enough! I do have a commission I'm waiting on that will also be period appropriate, but not sure when it will be done. In the meanwhile; I have these I can share. All are pieces I've been getting since 2008, shortly after Tonks and Luna joined us. Most are portraits, but some are just cool pieces with sheepdogs...

This was the first one we got: Tonks and Luna as pups. Before I realized they had grain-sensitive tummies, I used to get them dog treats from Einstein bagels...

and here's it hanging with another in our kitchen:

Here's a scan of the other piece in that photo of our kitchen wall:

then I got these two guys. The first was a commission of Luna that was given to me as a birthday present. So naturally I sought out the artist a few months later and got one of Tonks. The difference in time explains why stylistically they are a little different. The artist didn't do them both together, and I don't think he remembered exactly how he did the first one. Still, I love how they look:

and here's how they look hanging in the hallway:

Sam and Ralph! :D For some reason my household is obsessed with Sam and Ralph. Often when we start the day we'll do the whole "good morning Sam," "mornin' Ralph" bit. Its gotten worse since Amy's joined us.

I love the different commissioned art of the dogs. They're awesome. I wish I had had something done of our old dog, but never got around to it. I've thought about asking my niece to do a watercolor of the two big hairballs for me.
What a great collection, Allison! They're all wonderful, but I really love that piece of the girls when they were young.

This is just the tip of the iceberg-- there's so much more!

This one I got last summer. It was a bit of a con. The artist gave it to me as a gift, and I was bowled over. I gushed about how much I loved it, and THEN he suggested we trade art if I liked it so much. The guy isn't malicious or anything, but it caught me off guard. Ultimately, I loved I so much I said Sure, why not!

I can't wait to see the rest of the collection. Wow!
