Books and authors

If you had a spare shelf on the wall to devote to dog behavior, what books would you put there? What are your must reads when training or just understanding your dog(s)?

Authors - Patricia McConnell, Jan Fennell are good. I pull stuff from most everything I read though. From the extremes - like Cesar Millan to Karen Pryor. An idea here, another there, an observation, a different approach. Having all the tools you can is good, especially when you are doing training.

Jane Killion and her "Pigs Fly" books and articles are great - she tackles issues and stereotypes for the hard to train dogs. She has Bull Terriers

Little Dogs: Training Your pint-sized companion by Deborah Wood (not really for OES at all, but I got tons of helpful adaptations that really work for toy breed dogs!).

For agility - The Beginner's Guide to Dog Agility by Laurie Leach

I have many more, but I'm at work and the books are at home. This was what I could bring up off the top of my head and a quick search.
Bethany,
backing up dawn's 1st choice of patricia McConnell. 8)

I've learned great stuff from all the authors that Dawn mentioned.

I also liked How Dogs Learn by Mary R. Burch & Jon S. Bailey
Jon Bailey was a famous animal trainer who did lots of work for the armed forces and trained dolphins and lots of other animals. The book discusses the behavioural theory behind effective training so it's a bit theoretical but understandable and I found getting right back to basic principles really helpful.

I also enjoyed The Thinking Dog: Crossover to Clicker Training by Gail Fisher. (it even has a Beardie on the cover). It's quite a long read.
I like Patricia McConnell. I just ordered another one of her books having read the Other End of the Leash, last fall. I usually check out books from the library, but with the kids getting older, they should have reference material at their fingertips... :) I should too. Someone else might decide to show an interest in dog behavior books at the library and I'll have to wait for a book instead of just running in and checking it out for a reread. Oh the humanity!

Any specific Sheepie books? I went to order the Barron's guide and found that its not available.
"Inside of a Dog" by Alexandra Horowitz. She goes through some new ideas about the history of dog domestication, and talks about the wolf pack studies upon which a lot of current info is based. She also covers a dog's senses, which gave me more info on Oscar's deafness, and how it affects him as a canine.

Though it is not a book on training, I found it to be helpful because it caused me to think about my relationship with Oscar in a different way. I also like the way she looks at a dog as a canine, not like a furry human.

Laurie and Oscar
Also - the Control Unleashed Book, and now the same-named training programs are pretty good. (but I'd be leery of the programs, as people are reading the books and think they are instant experts and offering classes. I've seen this first hand - as in anything, do your research...:( )

This premise works with dogs that are reactive to the environment, and easily distracted or influenced by stuff in the environment. These were initially targeted at agility people, but now the concepts are used in the general dog training realm.
Some of it is tedious reading, but I've pulled concepts from it to use in training when dogs have these issues. I find it (the book) to have some really helpful training exercises that are fresh approaches to behaviors that are reactive in dogs.
