We were initially thinking about rescuing a puppy, but from what Im reading your chances are better after having experience with OES, which neither of us do. We dont mind waiting a few months but we'd like to have him/ her before the Winter time. We dont mind purchasing from a reputable breeder either, but we dont know where to start; hence why Im here . We live on Cape Cod and wouldnt mind driving up to 10 hours or so if the trip is promising. Any help you kind folks can provide is greatly appreciated. |

Hi Bonesy!
Please contact Tarja Peters. Tarja is the person responsible for OES puppy referral for our national breed club. She is here on the forum under the handle "OES Rule". You can pm her, or e-mail her, by using the e-mail icon on her profile- see the "Impressed" topic at the top of the puppy forum. Sorry Tarja- but I can't remeber your e-mail off the top of my head . She will get you in touch with some great breeders in your area! It is wonderful to meet an OES in person, and I'd say, this is an absolute must before you even consider buying a puppy from this very unique, wonderful, but also challenging breed. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE buy from a reputable breeder, who certifies the health of their breeding stock, and their puppies. Read the forum-look at the medical and behavioral areas, you'll see how much heartache is caused by not buying a dog from a reputable breeder! Best of luck in your search for a puppy, and welcome to the forum! Karen |
I understand that people like to have puppies, but please don't let lack of experience deter you from considering a rescue. (Of course, the rescue organization may favor an experienced owner for perfectly valid reasons but that's a separate issue). I recently got an older rescue and it is wonderful not to have to teach basic commands, housebreak, etc. I get all the pleasure of this wonderful dog without any of the challenges. It would be good to see some dogs in person because they are big and hairy and can be boisterous. . . If you do go with a breeder, I completely support the advice to contact Tarja. |
Thanks for the responses. Ill contact Tarja soon when the wife and I are 100% ready. I really would love to rescue but Im thinking with no prior OES's it may be a longer wait than Im looking for. This board is very helpful and everyone is so nice. Hopefully my wife and I will be a contributing element here too someday. |
Welcome to the forum!
You can also go to local dog shows, many times they are participating in conformation, agility etc. You are right to research the breed, they are a wonderful addition to your family-lots of love and antics. Its important to find a breeder you feel confident in, and who can be a supportive resource for you. I also agree, email Tarja and check out the OES of America site, under Judges education there is a great article on the breed standard with pictures. If I can be of any assistance to answer questions, please PM me as we are in Massachusetts......... |
Since you live in Massachusetts, if you have no children and a fenced yard, the wait would likely be fairly short to get an adult dog through New England Old English Sheepdog Rescue (NEOESR). Occasionally, OES puppies are available, but they go fast!
I've never owned a puppy. Is that good or bad? Or both? I think our wait was 6 months the first time, and the thing is Grannie Annie, the placement director for NEOESR, has a real talent and a knack for matching up the right dog with the right family. Their website is www.neoesr.org . Go online and submit an application, then wai a day or two and then give Annie a call. Good luck. |
Hey Bonesy! Did my new avatar on the Biskup Forum inspire you to run right out and get an OES???!! You'll like Maxmm too, she's a big Shag fan! And a sheepdog in a full coat is the closest thing you'll ever come to owning a real live Yeti!!!

Never owned a puppy??????????? Never had the joy of poop and pee all over the floor, sleepless nights from crying, chewed shoes socks and table legs, never experienced the joyful pain of those pin sharp baby teeth as they grab your hand or nibble your toe??????? Never had to run to the Vet every 3 or 4 weeks for months on end for "routine" shots that cost a fortune, never had to enjoy the total insanity of puppy kindergarten............................ OH RON, OH JOAN.............. you poor poor things.
I think we should all chip in and send Ron and Joan a puppy But back to the business at hand. BONSEY, congratulations on the greatest choice you ever made. OES are the grandest of beasts. Once you have been owned by a sheepie all else pales in comparison. Good Luck in your quest. I know the perfect puppy is out there waiting for you. |
Hello,
Just wanted to post my e-mail. It's oescrazy2@yahoo.com. Thank you Karen for referring potential buyer to me! It's soooo very appreciated!!! |
Hello Bonesy and welcome to the forum! Make sure you know what you're getting yourself into before you get an OES. Once you start you'll be addicted forever!
And yes, VerveUp is right, SHAG ROCKS!!! Glad to know there's others out there with the same taste. |
I can just picture Ron reading that message about everyone sending him a puppy!!!!!
Hey Ron, chest pain yet? Breaking out in a sweat? If we all keep this up Ron will be chasing delivery men away from his house with a shotgun. "If that box barks you'll never make it out of here alive!" |
Auntie Joanie and Uncle Ronny are very happy to visit with the puppies, and then go back to our adult dog, thank you.
(Maxmm, That's a very common occurance around here. I always have to be on my toes! [singing...] When you're in love with a beautiful woman, you watch your fence, When you're in love with a beautiful woman, its UPS.... Everyone loves her, Everyone sends her Everyone tries to send her puppies with love! When you're in love with a beautiful woman, it's all de fence... [/singing] |
What do you think Maxmm, male or female??? |
Ooooh a female definitely! Ron doesn't get nearly enough of a chick vibe just from being here with us and I'm sure that Joan could use an ally. |
