After we picked up some groceries, we saw a person selling dogs on a corner. As the dog geeks Danita and I are, we went to see what was going on. What we say just froze our hearts there. The guy was selling puppies and dogs in terrible conditions, som of them had missing patches of skin and showed signs of abuse. The puppies looked bad, and then the man had the nerve to offer us to buy a pregnant bitch! Man! I was so angry, I could barely contain my rage. I'm just glad I don't play baseball and have a bat on my car. We are already trying to contact the authorities and the animal protection organizations to see if he can be stopped, but I guess chances are bleak from that, given that the animal protection laws here in Mexico are vague and rarely enforced. If you had seen the faces of the dogs, it would have broken your hearts... they looked like slaves! Their eyes were just begging us to take them away from this man... I guess the most frustrating part is that if we buy all the doggies and give them away to good homes, this person will just go and get more dogs, more bitches pregant because he sees that business is good, so we would be not helping. I wish there was a way we could get the message accross.... And thank god there wasn't an OES there! Thanks for letting me rant... we've been very disturbed about it since yesterday and it's someting I don't want to let it pass until we've done something about it. |

Oh, Saul, what a terrible thing for you to have witnessed! I know it broke your hearts, as I'm sure it would have broken mine. It's so sad that Mexico's laws don't protect the animals the way they need to be protected.
We can only hope that compassionate people will take those dogs from the vendor. Please let us know if you hear anything further. Chris |
How heartbreaking. It makes me cry. Would that there were a way to stop all the inhumanity in the world. |
How horrible and I can't get the image out of my mind based on your description.
Ghandi had a famous quote regarding you can tell how civilized a society is by the treatment of their animals. It seems we still have a long ways to go in terms of how we view them and breaks my heart to know this kind of thing still occurs. Marianne and the boys |
That is awful... those poor babies.... |
Poor puppies
Were they being sold for pets or..worse? |
Unfortunately, puppies were sold for pets, the pregnant bitches were sold for breeding.
Marianne, you're right. I don't know how people have the nerve to call themselves civilized when they condone such things. |
I have heard from people who have traveled to foreign countries that dogs are often sold for meat. |
Poor puppies!
I know it's not the most eloquent or existential statement but, People suck! |

True. Cows and other animals are considered sacred in some parts of the world. Dogs to them, are like our cows and chickens are to us. Hard to swallow the thought when you're not brought up that way. |
Yeah, I know. Cultural standards are sometimes hard to understand and accept. Here on Mexico we have a breed that was created for eating purposes by our ancestors, the XOLOITZQUINTLE (Don't even try to pronouce it, even mexican's can't ) It was reserved for the tables of kings and royalty. I'm just glad they are pets now. We're banning pork from our table now that we learned that they can reach the intelligence of a 3 year old human child. |
That's so, so sad. Too bad we can't save every animal. |
I was kind of freaked out when I learned how smart pigs are too.... |
