OES & Search-Rescue

Could an average adult OES do well with Search & Rescue? Are there aptitude/instinct tests for Search & Rescue like there are for herding? I am curious if Lyra would be good at it. (To be honest, she's awful at finding the cat (who goes into hiding every night at medication time ) but she likes playing "find it" with her plushymonkey.

You might want to start with the Nose work course instead. Sheepies have done well in it. This way you could judge whether she has the mental stamina for seek and find. Do some web searching, hopefully there are classes/trainers in your area.

Search and Rescue takes a pretty agile dog and handler. If pup or you isn't up to that, there is always disaster relief, like Chewie and Dawn, going to disaster areas and doing the therapy bit. Who isn't at ease when meeting a fluffbutt?

I do believe sheepies are far smarter than people give them credit, they need a job just like other dogs. Find the right one and you'll be amazed what they can do.
OMG! Not another OES named Lyra!!! After a year with my girl, I've decided the world can't handle another like her. She's a sweetheart but oh, what a challenge!
I LOVE the name Lyra....(almost named Willow that)...but, since I have met Nita's Lyra, I thought I better choose a different name.... :phew: :P

Seriously, I agree that Search and Rescue would be very rewarding. I always wanted to train for it...but, being ...oh...well.. .AROUND....55-60..... I knew I was too old....but in my NEXT life!!!!!!

Dawn is doing great work with Chewy is Disaster Relief. You should PM her so she can give you the details...or, better yet...maybe she can find the post about when they went through the testing.

((*I am trying to talk Support Dogs into looking into training for Disaster Relief teams..THAT I would do...in a NEW YORK minute!!!!!!!)))

Keep us posted on Lyra's progress..... :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple:
Search and Rescue is a HUGE time and training commitment.
Teams are in nearly every state. I would love to do it, but I never would be able to make the time commitment. Being a nurse, I just couldn't drop my client and leave when there was a call!
However, my employers have been great with making my schedule shift on fairly short notice to respond to 2 disasters. Chewie and I went for a week after the Moore, OK and El Reno, OK tornadoes (lived through the 2nd one in shelter), and again in IL for the Coal City/Diamond tornadoes this fall.
