Here's the deal. He "pants" for lack of a better word, when he wants something. Like a woman in labor. He has done this since he was little, and I ignored it, so shame on me. But, lately it is really becoming bothersome. Maybe because I'm home all day right now, and I notice it more. For example, this morning I was in the kitchen, making coffee. He saw me get an apple - which is his favorite treat. He knew he was going to get a piece of it, and became all "hee, hee, haw, wee, haa" getting louder and louder, until he works himself up, into a bark. I know it's excitement... but how do I stop it. His word is "enough" when he is to stop his behavior. It works with everything but this. If he is already barking - "enough" shuts him right up. But once he "goes into labor" there is no stopping that panting. |

Your description of Tucker "in labor" had me in stitches. (Lyra used to "go into labor" for her PB/Kong) I think you're right that he may not be able to stop mid-labor (right now, he will be able to with practice). One suggestion would be short exposure exercises where the labor/excitement is induced (show apple piece). But then the object of his excitement is completely removed from sight (like put in cabinet & walk away). Then give his "enough" command & wait however long it takes for the labor to conclude. Only when calm & perhaps in "sit" or "lie down," is he rewarded. He sounds like an awesome, happy guy! |
hahaha... I think it sounds funny. He almost sounds like Yuki. There's only one treat she is allowed ....apples. So when we have one, sometimes Mr. J says he doesn't want to share. Yuki starts drooling REALLLLLY bad (all over the carpet), then starts shaking, then starts pretty much turning into some possessed maniac trying to control her anxiety from no one giving her an apple. The only thing that breaks it... is just as you are doing. Saying.. YUKI, NO BEG!! NO, GO AWAY... then she will break from it, walk away..............and then come straight back and begin cycle again. NOTHING would stop it ....the years and years we have tried. Putting her in a different room... leaving the kitchen ...are the only things that will work. Otherwise expect to always give him that treat. Thankfully we only give apples so this is the only time she behaves this way... but Lambo is learning from her and since he IS a counter surfer.... he's beginning to mimic this behavior whenever he sees sandwiches, apples, and macaroni n cheese.. He insists those are his allowed foods. |
Chewie used to do it when he was excited, and only on long car rides, getting close to our destination. But not for years, only as a young guy. Bond does it now, and when we slow down - like into a town, etc and he thinks we are getting somewhere....gee, they must be related!! For both - I tell them to stop it. Chewie eventually just stopped doing it, as he knew what was going to happen....me correcting him. Bond is in the mid stages of learning. Our last big show trip, we were in some bad weather, and were forced to creep along on the interstate. He was to the point when all I had to do was say "Bond" once...and he stopped. So progress is happening! It's just a habit - so if it's not something you like (drives me nuts, personally), then be consistent and he will toe the line. |
I always thought the excited/panting was sort of a Sheepie trait but maybe I'm wrong? I had asked my vet about my dog, Levi doing the same thing and he said he hasn't met a sheepdog yet that wasn't 'excitable' and a 'panter'. I dunno? My Levi used to get so excited his bottom mouth would just quiver. When it first happened, at one point, it scared me because I thought he might be having some sort of seizure but as soon as we got him out of the truck, he was jumping around and excited just to be going on a ride. I also noticed it on certain food, mainly his 'pizza bones' (pizza crust). |
