Shaving my OES

Hi everyone,

My boy, Ellery, is a 1 year old OES. About 4 months ago when he was transitioning from his puppy coat to adult coat we had him shaved to help with grooming. He was totally freaked out by his shave and acted quite strange for a little on a week. He also looked horrible, she lef his tail full length and his ears which made him look like a poodle!

But my problem at the moment is that his hair has grown quite rapidly but we live in Australia and at the moment we are in the middle of a heatwave, it has been close to 40 degrees celsius for a little on 2 weeks now. The heat is expected to continue for the remainder of summer.

Ellery loves playing in his little pool which is causing matts around his feet which just seem to get worse and worse each day despite my brushing.

Our groomer wants to shave him again. I am fine with shaving him (if that's what is best for him) but she wants to do a close shave and I am worried not only about his reaction again but with him getting sunburnt!

What should I do? Could I have his feet shaved closely and his body left a little longer to protect him and then even it out once the hair on his feet has grown?

Sorry, this is all new to me so I am not sure what I should do! Thanks :)

If the matts are bad then shaving is probably the only option especially at a groomers. Could the groomer shave his feet close then taper his legs to a longer cut on his body?

You can have just his feet shaved as long as he doesn't have matts elsewhere.

Where abouts in Aus are you? I'm in Melbourne.
Thanks for your reply. I think it might be best to shave him completely and let it all grow back at once. It might be easier with swimming in this heat.

We are in Albury/Wodonga :)
Yes, if the mats are down to the skin, shaving is the fastest and least traumatic option. I so dislike the long hair ears on shaved dogs and shave my sheepies ears as well. We don't have a tail here but would scissor that down, not shave. In the future, keep up with brushing even when in shorter coat so in the future your groomer can either shave with a #3 or #5 blade which leaves hair or scissor cut. It's OK to shave the undercarriage and inside back legs, it doesn't show.

How you handle the dog after it comes back from the groomer will determine its reaction. I always make a big fuss, telling the dog how lovely he looks, heap on loads of rubs and nose kisses. For weeks after I go out of my way to give body rubs so the dog associates massages with short hair and that's a good thing.

Definitely easier just to shave him down. And then keep him out of strong sun till it grows a bit.
Nice and hot for you up in Albury/Wodonga. I'm from Shepparton way originally.
Stay cool.
I shave/short coat Rsmsey for summer. He's a BIG swimmer and he would never dry. Such a shame doing all that work on his coat to cutnit for summer.

He LOVES the water. I have breakfast out back in the morning before work and he will swim laps, lol. We also have. beach pass and spend many days and evenings there. I couldn't imagine him salty water and sand covered in his full coat every other day. Once in awhile is ok, but the amount he swims, he gets cut down. I keep his head much more fluffy to protect his face and eyes from the sun.

Last year she shaved too close (I have new groomer now), but either put way I baby sunscreen on his white parts!!
We have sticks galore after years of drought. There is nothing soft out there, dead grass, broken weed stems, just cr**. So of course you know who has been picking up EVERYTHING on her under carriage and legs, face when she investigates, etc. My fingernails are broken, fingers raw from weed heads, etc so today she got and undercarriage trim. I'll shorten everything else up over time. I'd send her to Dawn for a "Chewie cut" if I could, but instead she'll get a chop job here. Haven't decided about the top knot........does that go too? If so I'll miss my little "Martian" for awhile. Sheepies surely do better in soft grass country.......can't even remember what that was.........
My dogs love getting their hair cut.
They start pulling it out when it gets long and they are so much more energetic & bouncy after a cut.
Susan - you can do either. One time I scissored Chewie down uniformly all over, but the rest of the time I have left his head a bit longer, still with topknot, etc. But if she is rolling and grinding her face in that dry and pokey stuff, I'd take it all off.
Nothing more fun than watching her roll and wiggle on her back, feet flailing........and then comes the consequences. Haystack is truly an appropriate name. I suspect all will be shortened, just someday when I am willing to say goodbye to the hair for 5 months.

Exactly the move I was picturing. Chewie does a head-first, scrape your face dive before he flips and rolls.....thank goodness Mr Hair, aka Bond has not discovered that move yet! 8O
