My 9.5 year old darling oes just died Thursday of bloat

She is our 3rd oes and I have never heard of this with this breed. We are sick and miss her terribly. Has anyone heard of this issue...or rolling stomach with these dogs? We also found it can be prevented with a semi simple surgery and are mad as anything that we could have had more time with our sweet girl.

I am so sorry for your loss. :(

Bloat can be an issue for deep chested dogs (large breeds like OES, St. Bernards, etc.). Sam is our first sheepie, and our vet has talked to us about the preventative surgery. It does not prevent bloat, but does keep the stomach from flipping. While it can't guarantee that your dog won't die from bloat, it can buy them some extra time to get help. I'm still not sure if we will do this for Sam. If we had a female that would be having surgery for a spay, it would be an easy decision for me, but with a boy, it's not as clear a choice.

Either way, just hold on to the wonderful memories you have of your sweet girl.

And, welcome to the forum.

I'm really sorry for your loss.
I have heard about bloat for large chested dogs like Newfys but didn't think it was as likely for OES. I have not heard about the preventative surgery and we have a Newfy so don't please feel bad about it.
So very sorry for the loss of your sweet girl. :ghug: :ghug:

Bloat is one of my big fears! It is so sudden and there is so little time.
Lost our first bitch to bloat.........and then 30 years later lost a Beardie to the same nasty condition. Some dogs are very prone. I try not to test fate; I under feed at meals, do not allow dogs to gulp meals, quiet times after meals (well, I try) and monitor dogs at all time for signs of distress. I'm so sorry for your loss. :ghug:
I am so sorry...I have heard of Sheepies with bloat and I worry about it.
I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. :(
So sad you lost your precious girl to bloat. Thinking of you all at this sad time. Unfortunately OES are up there in the stats for this type of situation as being a large deep chested breed can be proned to this happening.

Just popping up this link again, steps we can take to hopefully never experience this in our OES.
Things like too, after exercise no drinking till they settle and cool down, 2 smaller meals a day instead of one big one, again relaxed before feeding and after a meal, rest time. Great link this one for all to have on hand to recognise the symptoms and preventative measures too.

I also elevate Summers food bowl. I hope you stay with us, and that the precious memories of your sheepie help you through this sad time. please post a photo of her when you feel able.
Another sheepie found her angel wings....
