I took her to the vet yesterday, and they took X-rays. She has severe arthritis in both elbows. We already know she has severe hip dysplasia, and she has spinal stenosis. It's down by her tail bone. The vet said she will probably start walking on the tops of her feet, and loose feeling in her back legs. This just devastates me. We started her on Adequin injections. We will wait and see how she does with these. For those who know us, we will do everything we can to keep her comfortable. She walks on the water treadmill, gets Chiro, and has had laser treatments. Maybe acupuncture next? Hopefully we will see some improvement in the next few Weeks. Forum BBCode: (Copy everything in red) Lisa Frankie and Mattie |

Oh, sweet Mattie, how sad and upsetting. I know that if anything can be done, you will find it for her, Lisa. You have gone down so many paths with these babies, my fingers are crossed that you will find help for her. Maybe she will feel better when this miserable weather finally subsides |
So sorry to hear this about your sweet Mattie girl. Fingers crossed that the new medicine will give her some relief. You are a great sheepie mama and she will have the best care. Thoughts and hugs . |
oh..Lisa, I am so sorry....She is so sweet~~ And, like everyone else has said, you are doing everything you can. Look into acupuncture. Our Mille, (beardie) had trouble with her hips and spine at 14 and we were pleased with the results from acupuncture.. Please...gentle hugs from me...and keep us posted. In the meantime, prayers and white light are being sent to you all from all of us.... |
Oh that's sad. Actually she sounds like my DH |
Poor Mattie, I hope she gets some relief from the treatments. Cindy |
Poor baby, please keep updating on how things are going. Rastus has arthritis in his spine after an injury that occurred jumping our 7 foot high fence during a severe thunderstorm. He panicked and ran away. We're not sure about his hips and haven't xrayed because the treatment wouldn't change. He's slowly deteriorating and we've just changed his meds to Rimadyl which seem to have helped. We just need to watch his sensitive stomach though. I'll be interested to hear what works for you. Chiro is not an option as Rastus has a disc bulge so rotation aggravates the problem. The time I tried acupuncture he ate one of the needles at the second visit and the practitioner sacked us after that not that I blamed her. |
So sad to hear. How old is Mattie? I hope the treatments give her relief. |
Thank you all for the well wishes , hugs and prayers. Mattie turned 9 in November. I have her on a diet now. She had put on a lot of weight. Her thyroid has been an issue for a long time. We just can't get it regulated. So green bean diet, and sweet potato chips for treats. I'm hoping once this brutally cold weather breaks it might help. I will keep everyone posted. I keep thinking I need to become an advocate for better breeding. My understanding is that she came from the Amish. Puppy mill? Love my baby girl so much. Lisa Frankie and Mattie |
I am sorry to hear this, Mattie is such a special girl and to have all these problems is just unfair. Hopefully they will come up with a good solution and she'll have many more years. |
So Sorry to hear about Mattie's troubles. We are having mobility issues with Oscar as well. He will be 10 on May 1. This winter has been horrible. Between the snow and bitter cold, Oscar is having a hell of a time staying on his feet. His back end has been slowly losing muscle mass for the last two years, and the winters are absolutely brutal. We've tried everything, including the Adequan, but nothing has worked. Our vet still doesn't know why this is happening, as his xrays (hips, spine, knees, back feet) look great. The next step is an MRI, but I am loathe to put him though it right now, as he just healed from a rough surgery in November. I used to use Muttluks, but now they make it harder for Oscar to keep his feet, so I let him go bare pawed, and then he ends up with bloody paws and broken nails down to the quick. Not to mention fungal infections, as I have to keep rinsing his paws from the chemicals and snow/ice balls. Every time I try to come up with a solution, it just creates other problems. I am hoping the Adequan works for Mattie. It did help my first OES, who had elbow dysplasia (at 18 months old), so maybe it will help your pretty girl. And I feel for you this winter. It has been ridiculous. If it's not a blizzard, then it's 20 degrees below zero. I normally don't care about winter one way or another, but this is just too much. Stay warm and safe, and I hope the Adequan works its magic on Mattie. Laurie and Oscar |
So sad to hear about sweet Mattie. Hugs to both of you and positive thoughts that things will improve with the new medicine and some warmer weather. |
you are such a great sheepie mommy; Im so sorry Mattie is going through this. |
Poor Mattie. At least she knows her mom will take good care of her and make her comfortable. Take care Lisa. |
Lisa, I'm so sorry. I hope the treatments help Mattie feel better. Sending prayers and white light to you. |

Nelson just turned 9 yrs. old and is having issues in his back legs and thoracic spine. Chiropractic adjustment and acupuncture gave him amazing results. The cold weather has been tough on everyone, human or canine. He need to go back in a week or two for a second appointment. Sending hugs to Mattie and to her mommy for trying every possible option. These guys just seem way too young for this to be happening. In Nelson's case, his size is definitely a contributing factor. Keep us posted on what you find out. |
