Nearly eight years ago, I came to this forum asking questions about adopting an Old English Sheepdog I encountered while working near the Okefenokee Swamp Park in GA. I ended up adopting this sweet, active and very loving dog some three weeks later. We had a wonderful eight years together and he lived a wonderful life....where he played with his friends while I was working and came home with Malinois sister (and a second sister before she passed away in 2009) to play even more at home. Tonight he is at the rainbow bridge and with her again. What started as (what we then thought) a urinary tract infection got much worse to the point that my vet came to meet me today and check him out as she was becoming concerned with his symptoms. His gums were completely white by the time she saw him and I rushed him to the emergency veterinary clinic in Jacksonville a few minutes later. Unfortunately, there was little which could be done given the advanced stage of a tumor around his spleen and the pericardial cavity causing a massive effusion. He was a good boy, faithful companion, and stalwart friend. RIP Buddy! |

It sounds like Canine Hemagiosarcoma - which can affect the spleen. It causes internal bleeding as the tumor ruptures. To be honest there isn't much you can do at that stage but put them to sleep. You did the right thing for your wonderful friend - I know from personal experience how awful it is to lose your dog through this cancer. There is no real warning. Though it is hard the best outcome for your friend is to be at peace without pain. Here is a link to my own experience - heart goes out to you at this time. viewtopic.php?f=9&t=39433 Oes |
