I am confused! Any advice? |

Buy the Windows 7 it works well on the Dell I bought and is better than the 8. |
Thanks. |
Nobody I talk to seems to like 8 |
The big debate with 8 was enough to push me over to Mac. I purchased a Mac today. I have the iPhone, iPad,I touch, ishuffle, and Apple TV so it seemed the way to go. |
I'm having no problems with 8. Often I go to the desktop which is set up like 7 and everything is "normal." Don't let it spook you. I can understand Carol going over, with all the other i's it makes sense. Dell is/was still selling 7 on limited models, you'll have to take with them......more business type machines. For the average joe they are really pushing 8. |
From what I understand Win8 works great with touch screen devices but not so much with non-touch screen devices. Don't know if that's true or not; just what I've read. |
Mark is right; it was designed for touch devices. Using the desktop is what most people opt for. From a corporate standpoint, it sucks. People spend WAY too much time 'playing' and it's designed to look so much like a Mac/Linux hybrid, that its tough for us networking folks to work with as things are moved again like they did with 7; however, at least with 7 the moves were based on logic... Anytime we get a new computer with 8, we immediately downgrade to 7. Vance |
There is a positive to Win8. You can get 3rd party patches that disables Metro (Metro is the tile interface that most people operate Win8 by) and makes it look & behave like Win7. Why Microsoft doesn't give buyers this option is beyond me. |
My husband is in IT. I had had a Dell for a while. The update to Windows 8 did me in. I think Windows 8 is great if you have a device with a touchscreen, otherwise, it's just a pain. After hearing me complain for a while, my DH got me a MacBook Air for my bday in November. I have to say I was, and still am, completely in love! You will not regret the change. |
There is actually a way to turn off the Metro mode in 8; much like in 7, there is a way to enable, and I'm not making this up, 'God mode'; it makes many of the old XP admin features more accesable which is great for us hardcore old school XP lovers. Vance |
I've used a few Apple products and just never cared for them. My interest in Linux is growing. I've never played with it; heck, I've never even seen it. But it's lack of viruses and malware attacking it make it appealing. |
Mark - look into getting a copy of 'Lindows'; it's just what it sounds like. It's design to make a smoother transission from Windows to Linux. It's available as a free download just like Linux. Vance |
My son (computer nerd) just got a new gaming laptop. It's of course an 8. He was going to try it for awhile, and I haven't asked him how it's doing. Otherwise, you can just downgrade it to 7 pretty easily, if that is your preference. |
Good choice, Carol. I my Mac! |
Depends what you want to do. If you want a laptop come tablet then go for windows 8. Another issue is how much do you want too spend as well. Well you have to compromise on certain things in buy a lap top. 1. Do you want a large hard drive 2. Do you want a decent processor 3. Do you want a decent amount of ram. Mine would be 2 & 3 and have 8 gig of ram the min amount as most browser use up a lot and a decent processor. You can buy a external drive if you want too. Try to buy a laptop where you can expand you ram and it's not fixed |

Lots of great info. Thanks! I have my Mac for a few weeks now. Wow! What a difference. For me, the Mac is a good fit. |
