You're making news here in Aus with regard to how cold and how dangerous it is at the moment. They said it was colder in Chicago than at the South Pole!!!! Brrrrr I hate the cold. |

Keep cool! Australia's been in the news here about its record heat at the moment! |
Looks like US are getting very cold weather & we are very wet in the UK |
That's why they were calling Chicago........Chiberia. I forgot to check Siberia's temps. |
The bad stuff is mostly past us in MN now, thank goodness. Our peak cold was actual temp of -23F, with windchill -50-something. Today we rebounded to 8 above zero....and a windchill of -5. Still supposed to drop to -15 degrees tonight, but the wind is supposed to be much more reasonable. |
I really feel that the media is kinda sensationalizing the cold. It's winter in North America. It's cold and it snows. |

It's in the negatives here in Atlanta, which is unusual. But without snowfall or an ice storm, we're thankfully not seeing any weather related casualties. No one seems to be losing power, no one seems (so far, fingers crossed) to be losing their lives to the cold- at least not here in Georgia. School has been cancelled, because the heating systems were never meant to deal with this sort of extreme drop in temperature. But otherwise, it's winter. My winter garden is probably doomed, but growing vegetables in December was always a novelty anyway! |
The degree of the low is what is noteworthy. The 500 mb level on weather charts is the average to what forecasters use. The elevation of this varies with weather...among other facturs such as latitude. The 500 line for the Polar Vortex was around 4850 meter over Ontario, that same day the 500 mb line over us was 5730 m. A difference of 30-35 m is significant, but here was one almost 1,000 m difference. The "dip" in the atmosphere sure allowed the cold to billow down from the polar regions. I'd like to find a chart showing what the readings were back for the last Polar Vortex in 1985.........I suspect something similar. Yeah, with Weather Channel, weather has become sensationalized. I like your attitude. This is winter in the NE, deal with it. |
Glad to hear you're all surviving! Victoria has missed the heat due to Cyclone Christine. I love the heat. All the news here said that y'all were getting record lows and that the weather in Chicago was so cold that it could damage your lungs just breathing deeply. Yikes. I know further north was really cold a couple of days ago. Kim said she and David had really cold weather. |
I'm outside Chicago and did not go to work on Monday because of the cold. Schools were closed, garbage pick up postponed, even Trader Joe's was closed. I dropped books off at the public library yesterday and they have been closed for 2 days because of no heat. Fortunately the wind has died down, and today it is supposed to get into the double digits--like 10. I'm far too old to be anything but crabby about this. Some meteorologist claimed that this won't happen again for years. I better not be living here when that occurs. |
mim, we'll be ok, Canada is helping us out. http://www.veryfunnypics.com/pics/view/ ... ing%20Mitt |
You,re making news here too.....keep warm. http://www.yr.no/nyheter/1.11456418 Good it's not too bad then It's raining here too like in UK....... green winter so far in Norway.. Lovely when it's sunny and easy to breeth. |
Mmmm that texting mitt is ummmmmm. Well words fail me actually. |
Indeed Hawaii has had it's "fun"....35 inches of rain over Christmas in places on the North Shore. I like boring weather, boring sunny weather. An hour of overcast and we get grumpy. |
I will need to keep cool next week! The southerly winds have gone and we're forecast to have some very hot days |
Northern lights could be visible early Friday morning The polar vortex may be gone, but another extreme event is coming. Space weather experts say northern states may be able to see the aurora borealis, or northern lights, today and tomorrow morning. "We're hoping," said Joe Kunches with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colo. "The sun has done its part, it produced a fast, energetic eruption about the middle of the day Tuesday." |
Cold weather is good. Cold temperatures, brutal cold temperatures play havoc on invasive pests including weeds. It's been too warm the last decade and unwelcome pests have moved into the area including lake shores. Hopefully some will be knocked down by subzero temps. Dawn, Bond and Chewie might see freezing by end of week?? If not today. |
Hurray!!!!!!!!! The computer says 11 above!!!!!!! Yeah!!!!!!! Think I'll run outside without my coat.........nah....not yet! |
After subzero, 11 might seem tropical! How about you wait a few more days! |
It made it to 25F here today. 36F tomorrow. 53F on Saturday. |
going to feel like a heat wave. Good old 70 and 80 degree temp swings. No wonder house paint wants to jump off the house. |
We'll be back around 80F 25c today and the weekend. I'm so happy. The ocean temp is 68F 19C for those who like to keep track of those things. |
