Once we return, we would love to get together with some other sheeepies who are relatively close by. I know there are a few Long Islanders on the forum and some in New York and New Jersey. I'm hoping we can meet up in the near future (obviosly after we're cleared by our vet). I have admired the warmth of this community form afar for so long and can't wait to meet some people and their adorable pups in person. There's actually an OES two blocks over from us. Only 6 months old and so handsome. I've only seen him when I've been running early in the morning and I think the lovely owner already thinks I'm a stalker. What I really want to say is THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HELP. I posted a while ago looking for a reputable breeder for our first sheepie (but not our first dog). This forum has been an AMAZING resource for me. I've read deep into threads for hours (and I mean HOURS), getting caught up in many wonderful and sometimes intense discussions. When I first asked about a couple of breeders I got some helpful feedback. Then a few people PMed me with more terrific advice. Nita was particularly helpful in guiding us with care. We ended up working with Wigglebottom's Beth Ginther and she has been so great, forthcoming, and really a joy to be in touch with. She's sent us all the health certificates and the five-generation pedigree. We've had regular pictures and updates and real reassurance that we're dealing with someone who adores this breed and is a tremendously reputable (as well as kind and funny to boot!). Our family is over-the-moon. It's been hard to wait, but well worth it obviously! We're holding off on a name till we meet her; we've got Clementine, Taxi, and Ginger Cookie in the running (I like Tetley, but my family nixed it). Our next challenge ( other than not grabbing all 10 puppies) is getting through the first night in a hotel room with the baby girl. We're staying at the Comfort Inn, Clarion PA. I have visions of running our little one past the front desk numerous times while the night clerk stares daggers at me! Next the puppy food. We're between Natural Instinct and Fromm's Gold large breed puppy. She's coming home on Puppy Chow, so we'll transition slowly off after a week or so. She's the cutest thing ever (as they all are), with a perfect little beret of black positioned rakishly on her head. This is excellent for many reasons, including the fact that my husband is a historian of France. As soon as I'm not running out the door, I'll post some pictures that Beth sent us. (She's also a wonderful photographer). Sorry this is so long, but I've been reading so much of this forum, I wanted to thank each and every one of you for caring so much about this breed (and all dogs), and welcoming new members so generously! Good luck and have a safe trip home... Nita is among the best people we've run into in the sheepie world!!! I've also known Beth for a couple years and she is top shelf too. She is the kind of breeder you want behind you. She'll help you anywhere you need it. As for food, I'd go with whatever Beth recommends and is readily available near you. The last thing you want is to decide on a certain brand and formula that is only carried in one store that's 45 miles away. You should be able to narrow things down to a couple choices. We went with Pro Plan as suggested by our breeder and a second vote by our show mentor. And yeah, photos are an unofficial requirement of new sheepie owners, so get on it! Vance |
pictures...pictures...pictures....(pleeeaaaassseeeee........ ) Love babysheepie pics!!!! |
Congrats on the new puppy. Stay safe in your travels and just enjoy your new puppy! |
have a great trip! Send pictures when you can! To this day, we love road-tripping with our girls. I know it can be stressful with a brand new puppy, but exciting too! |
Congrats on your new fur baby! Have a safe trip and we all look forward to lots of pics as she grows. |
Congratulations on your new sweet puppy! Can't wait to see pictures of her! Safe travels!! |
First night in a hotel is going to be interesting! We travel with Benson frequently, and always ask for a first floor room at the end of a hall (near an outside door). Among other things, it keeps you from getting waylaid by people adoring her cuteness when you are trying desperately to get her outside. We had a potty alarm set for every 2 hours, day and night, for Benson's first week home. It was tiring for us, but her only accidents came from excitement. And yes, we need PICTURES!!! |
How exciting!!! Pictures please... |
Great way to start the new year. |
Puppy!!!!!!! I use Fromm's large breed puppy and have been very happy with it. You can't take enough pictures when they are little btw, lol Congrats!!!! |
Here's my first attempt at uploading a photo (well, a few). She's singing! Done on a phone in the car in Cleveland...we're almost there! Hope this works... |
Now that's what we're talking about!!! Great photos!!! Vance |
So excited for you! The pictures are so cute and she has already charmed us What a great way to begin the New Year Looking forward to hearing about the name game |
Thanks for the lovely responses. Here's our New Year baby making her way to us (and displaying Beth's great eye)... Hadn't thought of her as a New Year puppy, but of course she is (thanks, Brenda!) Daisy |
She's adorable. Great way to start a new year. |
She is so cute. Congrats. Have fun with her and drive careful. You are giving me puppy fever. |
What a cutie!!! |
SOOOO CUTE!!!! |
What a sweetheart!! You have me reminiscing about bringing my girl home nearly 6 years ago now. Sigh where does the time go. Enjoy every moment. |
Really cute |
Congrats! She is adorable!! Cindy |
Nice checking in now, I get to enjoy photos as well. She's cute, and should be a really nice pup for you and the family. Beth does a good job with her dogs. Re: food - my vote is to go with the Fromm's Large Breed puppy, the one in the aqua colored bag. Bond was started on it by Kristine, and he and his sisters (with Kristine) did great. We both already use other Fromm foods, so using the puppy one was a logical step. Then wean to an adult food by 6 months. Bond was a hair over 5 months when he switched, his sisters about a month after, if I remember correctly. |
I am SO happy for you I know you will love her. Several meals a day right now, softened with warm water. Transition to Adult formula of food at 5-6 months & 2 meals a day for life then. I gradually switch to less softening of the kibble as their baby teeth fall out & adult teeth come in. I use Purina ProPlan Lamb & Rice on my 2 older ones & my puppies have been on the adult formula of ProPlan Sensitive Skin & Stomach since they were weaned starting around 4-5 weeks of age. Lots of choices out there. |
Where on Long Island are you? We're on the North Shore in Nassau County and we've got an almost 14 month old male sheep! |
Thanks all! What a great welcome!! Had to delay our visit since the roads from Toledo to Michigan are dicey today to say the least. My husband and I were ready to give it a go, but luckily cooler heads prevailed... Beth has promised to snuggle our girl for us. Saturday seems so far away... Andbnew- we are in Lido Beach (Nassau county too!) on the south shore. We'd love to get in touch and be benefit from your LI and sheepie knowledge. Thanks again all! |
OMG! Adorable! |
