I may hate you for this as it is fascinating. |
did you look at Antarctica today? Holy Moly! |
Maybe it calmed down since you posted, it doesn't look too bad right now. I've been sending this link to heaps of people. It's great. |
No, I was talking about the oceans around the continent. Land surface is pretty calm, but fun watching the currents over the oceans, all the swirls. Imagine trying to navigate in a sailing ship in all those wind direction changes. |
Oh yes I've been watching those for the last few days, they're pretty. I'm logging on a few times a day. It amazed me too that it's still not that long ago that the only way for humans to get around the planet was in a small ship at the mercy of those winds. |
I finally had a chance to check it out - cool beans! |
I really want to see this! I can't get there because I don't have ie9... that stinks |
Shellie wrote: I really want to see this! I can't get there because I don't have ie9... that stinks Can you download firefox? I'm on an older version and it works nicely. |
hate firefox- not anxious to change. Takes me too long to adjust... |
You can have Firefox and whatever other browser you usually use loaded at the same time. Just untick any boxes that say it will make it your preferred browser or load the toolbars etc. |
Whilst the wind patterns around Antartica might look pretty it seems they've caused a bit of trouble. There's a Russian scientific ship stranded in pack ice and Chinese, French and Australian icebreakers have been unable to reach them so they're just waiting for a break in the weather to send in a helicopter to rescue all the passengers. They've been stuck since Christmas eve. Not my idea of the best way to spend the festive season. http://www.theage.com.au/travel/travel-incidents/antarctic-ship-passengers-to-be-evacuated-by-helicopter-20131231-3041j.html |
Wow that is really awesome to watch! We are having a lot of wind right now so seeing it in real time and hearing it outside is eerie! |
A long-awaited rescue of passengers on board the Akademik Shokalskiy, a research ship that has been trapped in Antarctic ice for more than a week, is finally underway. Expedition spokesman Alvin Stone said a helicopter from a nearby Chinese icebreaker has started to evacuate the 52 scientists and tourists on board. The ship's 22 crew members plan to remain with the icebound vessel. |
