Worried about bogey.

On December 12 bogey and Susie went to groomer. As they have many times. When I picked them up, one of the girls who bogey has know since he was a pup, was putting them in the car. Bogey refused. Never has he done that before. She was going to help him and he turned and let her know not to do that. I was able to convince him to get in. It is an SUV, not very high though. When he got in, he cried. That night at home he limped and cried. That was a Thursday. He limped and cried a little Friday morning. Friday I tried to get him to vet. But he would not get in car and I cannot lift him.
I went and bought a ramp. He will not do it. He's has done that before too. Vet told me to give him bufferin twice a day. I did. Bogey stopped limping and crying. He will not get on the couch or bed. That is very unlike bogey.
For days I have tried everything to get him to vet. I picked up ACE to help with getting him in car. Finally I put him in a crate and a friend lifted it up to the rear of the car and then opened the crate and bogey was in car. We went to vet finally Thursday December 19. That's a week after this started. Bogey did get out of the car himself. Vet did a physical exam and ruled out hips. Hips are good. But there was pain when she touched his mid back. She thinks a sprain. Gave me rimadyl and wants to see how he does in a few days. We had to do the crate lift again. He was doing ok but still not on bed or couch. Today he tried to play ball with Susie. He started yelping and had to lay down. He cried for a bit. Now he is laying down and seems to be ok. He is eating and going outside as usual.
I am afraid it is more than a sprain.
Anyone with experience on this? Sorry this was sooooooo long.

Poor Bogey.
No advice but I hope he feels better soon.
Could be a nasty sprain that flared up again after he played. He might have been feeling better with time and meds and overdid things. It's usually 6-12 weeks for a sprain to heal and even then it's wise to graduate back into activity.

Other possibility is a disc injury although usually for it to flare up quickly there would be either an injury (reasonably significant) or he has wear and tear already and then a sprain flares it up. How old is Bogey and does he have a history of any falls or injuries?

Either way as long as he only has pain, no loss of sensation or muscle weakness the treatment is rest and meds. It's just that a disc injury takes much, much longer to heal and is a little more prone to reoccurring.

If you want to check sensation in his back legs you can:
a. gently tickle his toes
b. touch parts of his leg when he's not looking and see if he notices(not reliable)
c. when he's standing up take one foot and fold it back and under at the wrist so to speak so he is resting his foot on the hairy top of his toes instead of the pads (hope that makes sense). If he doesn't realise quickly and put his foot back flat on the floor then he has lost some sensation and proprioception and you should see his vet.

I had a kelpie who had an acute and very bad disc injury years ago and though it took weeks and weeks he recovered well with just residual stiffness and he became arthritic as he aged. So hopefully Bogey will make a good recovery even if its a disc.

He does need to rest his back though so no playing or running around (never met a sheepie yet who knew how to take it easy when there was fun things happening) :D  . Supervised leash walking or strolling in the back garden.

Poor boy and poor you, hope he gets better fast. :crossed:
Thanks mark. Thanks Mim! Will try those tests. Great info. It hurts me so much to hear him in pain.
Bogey is 4 1/2. No injuries here. However I was wondering if something happen on the grooming table. He was fine until I picked him up from the groomer
Yes it is difficult to keep a sheepie from playing but I will.
Hopefully just a sprain which will go away. :crossed:
:ghug:
Mim is the expert here, but when I first read thy symptoms I wondered did Bogey have a fall at the groomer, maybe fell out of the wash area? I doubt anyone will fess up. I'm suspicious about a disc injury from a fall or sudden awkward movement. Hopefully just a sprain and rest and Rimadyl will allow him time to heal. Limit play time but gentle walks are good. No jumping (I doubt he will want to) and if there are steps, see if you can assist with a towel under tummy with a gentle lift at crucial points. Gentle massage, gentle may help him relax.
Sending get well hugs to Bogey! :ghug: Sounds a little to me like something did happen at the groomer-it's possible that they would not tell you about it for fear of having to pay vet bills etc.
I thought the same thing as Susan. Perhaps he slipped in the tub or jumped off the grooming table and sprained his back. Mim's the expert. Good that you got Bogey to the vet to be seen somehow.
Hopefully it is just a sprain. Even that will take lots of rest and no playing or jumping for weeks if that's what it is. Hope that it will resolve with rest and pain meds. It sounds like your boy is very smart and knows enough to take care of himself by not doing what hurts.
Poor Bogey, hope he is feeling better soon. I too wonder if something happened during grooming?

Thank goodness for the rimadyl meds effectiveness. At least his pain is being controlled.

Big hugs to you, Carol. I can only imagine how worried you must be :ghug: please keep us updated on his progress.
I was thinking the same as the others that something happened during grooming. It is too bad you don't know what happened because diagnosis would be easier. I agree with everything Mim said: rest and for many weeks will help. You have back problems so you understand how just a little jarring can set it off again if not healed.

Violet has HD, which everytime I took her to the groomers, I would remind them to be careful with her since she has HD. The last time I took her, I went over the usual insturctions and when I picked her up she was limping. I never took her back again. I started grooming her myself, but I don't think that is the answer for you. You might want to talk to the groomer and see if she'll enlighten you on what may have happened, but when you do take him back, make a point of reminded them that he has back issues and to treat him as he does.

I hope Bogey is feeling better soon.
Thanks all! I don't think the groomer will answer me honestly if there was an incident,
The vet wants him back for X-rays if he does not improve soon.
Getting in the car takes two or three people. Now I am trying to think of a type of hoist that I can out the crate on so I can get him in the car alone. Or is there a much longer lightweight ramp?
My poor bogey. He still has has his great disposition. Always kissing me. But his eyes tell me he is having problems, he so wants to be in bed with me. He loves that.
Poor guy. I hope he gets some relief from the pain soon.
Poor you too, Carol - how distressing to not know what happened and how. :(
carol hey call me i will be there to help put him in the car weird that it had to happen at the groomer please call me
:ghug: its so hard when they hurt, and you can't help. Poor Bogey! Here's to hoping it's a minor injury, and he'll be well again soon!
A disc injury can occur easily if the disc is already damaged. I know of a Shar Pei who just jumped into the back of the car like he did every day and yelped, then lost control of his back legs overnight. A scan revealed a very bad disc bulge but the vet said he already had wear and tear in his spine so it was just one of those things.

It might have happened if he slipped at the groomers but you're right they are unlikely to tell you so no point spending too much energy on it. I hope he's feeling better. It's so hard to see them in pain and not be able to fix it.
I am so sorry to hear Bogey is not feeling well. Hope he is better soon!!!
