I have not been able to find a straight answer about this online- do old english sheepdogs shed?? I know they lose hair when you comb and brush them, but do they shed like crazy like a lab or a german shepherd would? Thank you! |

I think the answer is.....:
No. Sheepies don't shed, other than when they blow their puppy coat. But I'm not an expert....I could be wrong! |
Hi,
This question is right up my alley so to speak..I have both a Lab and OES. While OES's hair is found on the carpet in "clumps" as if someone cleaned out a hairbrush or comb and left it in the middle of the floor. Easy to pick up...no problem!! Unlike the Lab....ewwww tons of fine hairs all over and very difficult to pick up even with a vacuum. Just had to relate a somewhat humorous story...for many years I did Pet Talks for local school children with my OES, Shaggy. Once she was very ill and I had to substitute the Lab, Blue in her place. His hair was very apparent all over the light grey carpet in the library where the talk was held. Apon leaving I apologized to the principal for Blue having shed all over the carpet. He immediately picks up the PA and calls for the janitor...it was then I realized he misunderstood exactly what I had said!! Ha Ha!!! |
Marianne! Hahaha! Great story! I love it! |
Hi,
We are (hopefully) getting an OES and I have been buying books/researching etc. Most reports on shedding are VERY different/confusing. Some indicate they shed constantly and profusely. Other say they only shed in clumps or the hair comes out when grooming. Can anyone tell me if they will shed like a Golden or dogs - ie/ when you brush by them with your black suit on are you covered??? Is it all over the couch/doggie bed? Can someone please elaborate on this? We are familiar with the Soft-coated wheaten terrier that sheds when brushed - or in clumps occassionally but nothing on your hand when you pet them. Is the OES like this?? Thanks! Victoria in Canada |
Hi Victoria,
Kudo's to you for doing your research! I have owned a sheepdog now for 2 years and my experience has been that she does shed, but not like a Golden or lab. I like to call them tumbleweed, and at times it can be alot. I don't however find stray hairs on my clothes like a shorthaired dog, but if you are not vigilant in vacuuming, you can have little "clumps" appear on clothes. The shedding is definately not like a short hair dog where the hair will be on your hand while petting. I find it easy to vacuum up but be prepared, it seems the tumbleweed multiplies and no matter how many times I vacuum, I can find a stray "tumble" somewhere! Good luck on getting your dog. Being owned by an OES is one of the best things I have ever done! Ann & Phoebe LI, NY |
Thanks Ann and Phoebe for your reply! Yes, we have been researching various breeds (going to dog shows, buying books, etc) in order to find the 'perfect' pet.
We both prefer large breeds - that are enjoyable to pet and they must be great with kids. I know that I would not do well with a Lab and the short hair everywhere or a long haired dog that left silky strands on your suits or furniture. I am a fairly fussy housekeeper and think the vacuuming of 'balls' of hair will be just fine. I also am looking forward to the grooming part. i think the dogs look great long, clipped, and everything in between! Just a couple additional questions for anyone out there: 1. Will a male or a female be a better choice for with our kids?( I am not keen on battling Alpha dogs...) 2. Should we wait a few years for our kids to grow? (2 and 4 years) 3. Is this dog going to be OK with a walk or two per day and lots of backyard time for exercise requirements? 4. How does this breed compare for speed/ease in housebreaking? Thanks everyone!
