I've been looking at tadpole trikes for MONTHS, and even saved up enough to make an offer on a good used one - until the 4WD broke on the Jeep last week. Bye-bye trike, hello repair bill! BUT . . . hubby got tired of me lusting mournfully on the Utah Trikes site, and since they've got a good sale price and 0% financing at the moment, today he ordered this for me: http://www.catrike.com/#!villager/cmei I'm very excited! It's going to be painted purple, and we've upgraded the shifters. I can't wait until it gets here! I'll be riding indoors on a trainer all winter, so hopefully that will mean some weight loss and stamina building before heading up and down the hills around home. And the recumbent seat and stability of a trike should be MUCH easier on my bad back than a regular diamond frame bike. Eventually I want to get a DoggyRide so Benson can come with us. (Whether that's this year or next depends on how those hills feel!) Did I mention I'm very excited? |

I've seen similar ones, but not as nice as that one. I've thought about one like that for a while. After two knee surgeries, I just can't pedal a regular bike for very long. Congrats! I bet you'll have fun with it! |
That looks fun! We have several in the area that I see out and about. I don't see them outside the city limits though - only in town. I love the concept, and for your back they should make a huge difference. I would be slightly paranoid on it, sitting so low...but that's just me. Low slung cars drive me nuts too. I like to be setting up high enough that I can see and have some hope that others see me as well. My best friend's husband does marathons, and ultra's (50 miles and up ). He got an elliptigo as a training bike....it is really cool! http://www.elliptigo.com/ |
Teresa, a lot of riders with physical problems (knee and hip replacements, arthritis, etc) seem to do better with a recumbent position. I think it has to do with the different muscle groups you are using. Also, with a trike you don't spend any energy balancing, so you can put it in a big gear and pedal slowly without fear of wobbling and falling down. Then there's a whole other level of adding electric assist so you can take it easy if your physical issues flare up. You're right, Dawn, visibility is one of the first things people worry about. One good thing is that recumbent trikes are unusual, so they tend to catch the eye of passing drivers better than bikes do. And they look like they take up more space on the road (even though most are really just about shoulder-width), so cars often give them a wider berth. I used to bike commute to work (many years ago), so I'm also big on bright clothing, reflective tape on panniers, and flashing lights front and back. I'm also going to take the opportunity to have lots of fun with different flags - anything to catch someone's eye! (And did I mention, I was excited? ) |
So are you excited? Looks cool, enjoy. |
Congrats! That looks like it will be a lot of fun! |
Not being a serious biker since childhood, I can see that I am out of the Loop!! That is one awesome bike!!! |
It's here! And Benson has dutifully fulfilled her inspection responsibilities: My only frustration is that they forgot to include the trainer we ordered in the shipment, so I haven't actually spun the wheels yet. (In all fairness, we added that as a separate transaction after the initial order was placed, so I understand the mix-up.) And it's 25 bleepin' degrees right now, so I'm not riding outdoors! |

He flies on that baby! It has the full gear ratio so it really moves. I see him in town going at least 30mph - right up with the cars. He had a really bad crash on it a couple yrs ago d/t reckless speed! And he's my age (our birthdays are the same week even) so he SHOULD know better. |
The trainer came today, so I finally got to take my first real "spin" on the trike! Considering I haven't ridden anything in over 2 years, and the fact that I am **ahem** quite overweight, I feel very good after my half-hour spin. No sore back (YAY!), no sore joints, no feeling of my heart bursting out of my chest. I have the whole rig set up in front of the video player, so I popped in Episode 1 of "The Story of English" - and the half-hour was gone before I knew it! Now I've got my winter riding/viewing all planned out - The Story of English first, and then I start in on my complete set of the JVC Anthology of World Music (music geek!), and if it's still cold out, then comes The Power of Myth. That's at least 60 hours of riding! I am psyched! |
That sounds like an excellent winter plan...and I need to get back on my darned elliptical!! |
