A warm front comes from the West coast from Vancouver and comes over the mountains bushing the cold weather away and raising the temperatures by 15 degrees centigrade (60 degrees Fahrenheit) in a few hours. Then we get this characteristic chinook arch of cloud formed, a welcome sight. It was particularly beautiful a couple of days ago with red sky in the background and the mountains in the distance where the sky is clear. The boys enjoying the snow |

Great pics! I have a friend that used to have a Husky named Chinook. I loved that name. |
Yep, Chinooks were common along the Front Range in Colorado. Was common to be skiing and return home to 60 degree weather. Chinooks allow the animals on the plains suddenly had food after having it covered for weeks or months. Looks like your herd is enjoying the thaw. Now I live on the wrong side of the mountain (west side) so Chinooks are uncommon. |
Great pics! Wonderful light and coulors on the sky and Mountains! Neither I nor the Google translater nor my fat dictionary knew about "chinooks" - thanks for Learning me about your special clouds or weather and new english words. |
I had never heard of a chinook before coming to Calgary, they are special. Cute Christmas picture Grete |
That must have felt like heaven. We get warm fronts up from the gulf coast, but I wouldn't say it's a real chinook....although some people here call them that. |
This is the only Chinook I'm familiar with. |
Ha ha! |
LOL!! Yeah, we used to get those quite often. Every time they'd come in mass I think of Wagner's Valkyrie from the movie ??? Apocalpyse Now. Now we get Ospreys......man are those thing noisy! Nothing stealth about them. You are the person to ask..........other day an F18 did the high performance take off in front of me.......where they go nearly vertical just after take off......what's that called? All I can come up with is performance take off. Impressive. Heck hard to drive and suddenly have a jet go vertical, it might have been an F16, didn't look much at the tail. |
Sorry to bore you with pictures but the boys look so cute in this one, they also are so patient waiting for me to take photos: Especially Monty as he has a little bit of tongue showing: |
That is so cool. I learned something new today, a good thing. |
I have never experienced a Chinook but have been fascinated by them, must be quite an experience. |
