pee stains on my carpet

Hi we rescued an oes in Jan, she urinated alot on our carpet, but is housebroken now. I cleaned up the spots myself but waited to have them cleaned professionally til recently . Since I did that they look much worse, any suggestions or do we need new carpets?? advise please??

When you steam clean carpets, stains often come back worse than before because it makes the carpet act as a wick and brings everything up to the top.
I found the best thing to use was a steam cleaner with alternative bleach in it instead of carpet cleaner. Aslo, if you don't want to steam clean again, I would try rubbing alcohol.
I use an oxygen based spray cleaner... It even got out BBQ stains.
In my last house we had a synthetic fiber carpeting...we could never get stains out if it..

Good Luck I hope you find something that works

Try my special recipie for stains:

1. try to pick up as much as you can with paper towels (In your case, just spray with a water bottle to moisten the carpet)

2. Get yourself a bottle of mineral water, mix 3 parts mineral water with 1 of vineagar and add some baking soda (Watch out, it will fizzle a lot!).

3. Moisten the carpet with this mix and pick up with paper towels.

4. Rinse with distilled water.

5. To pick up the rest of the stain, use some oxigen based powder cleaner, just follow the instructions to prepare the mix, apply to the carpet by spraying, rub and pick up with paper towels.

6. Rinse again with distilled water and air dry.

Hopefully this will get rid of the stains.

Good luck!
Thanks I will try your suggestion!! Jan
I also recommend the the Bissell Little Green Clean Machine. I've found if you get them right away it's like it was very there.

Also, what works to draw the stain out is to get the stain wet (I usually use the Bissel solution but I think any cleaner like others have suggested would work) and put a light colored wet towel over the stain. As it dries, it pulls the stain out. I have beige carpet and that method has helped immensely!
I do the towel thing but I also stack books on top of it. The weight helps to pull up more liquid.
Ok I will try it the carpet is beige also, and there are at least 10 or more huge spots!!! It is a combonation from our new OES and our girl who was 14 and lost it many times on the carpet. It looks so nasty i don't even want to look at the carpet!!
I used vinegar and water. It also removed blood stains from heat cycles.

Of course new carpeting is always nice. Need more bait? "But honey, I can't get the stain and smell out of the padding."
So how much vinegar and water, spray it on, rub it on?? Scrub it with a brush?? I'll try anything. I hate to get new carpets, they are in good shape otherwise. They just look so nasty!!
3 parts mineral water and 1 part vineagar, with a spoonful of baking soda to make if fizzle. You can get one of those 3 liter bottles, the spray top from any spray bottle will screw right on it.

Spray on, then rub with paper towel or a cloth. I do not recommend scrubbing with a brush, because the fibers of the carpet may get damaged. Try and see if you can get away with it. Sometimes a toothbrush will work great and is less hard on the rug.

When you get to the oxygen based cleaner, most of the work is done by the fizzle from the baking soda. You may also want to sprinkle the baking soda on the carpet instead of mixing it with the mineral water and vineagar to let the bubbles scrub the carpet.

This method has worked wonders for me... then you realize you need to clean the whole carpet because now the sport is so clean that it stands out from the rest of the rug.
I used almost half and half. Little less vinegar. I took a small bowl to the spot with me. Moistened a clean cloth and used my fingers to squish it down in between the fibers, down to the carpet backing. More like a squeezing effect upwards. I go in deep and work outward.

Then repeat until cloth is clean. Let dry and repeat if necessary.

Good luck on whatever you use and the method used.

If that don't work, get some 3M carpet cleaner (spray bottles) from a carpet store. I just used that on a graphite stain. Worked great.
Hi,

I feel for you..as between my new pup 8 wk Merlin, and my aged Shaggy my carpets had taken a beating for a 2 month period. Most supermarkets allow you to rent a steam cleaner for about 25 dollars. Although the solution that you use with it is about 25 dollars too. :( Just a thought but perhaps you can rent a machine and then use the combination of vinegar and water solution and other things that was recommended by the previous post.

I had always wanted a carpet cleaner as I rent those machines a lot, but found the cost was too high. Lately I've been going to those huge outdoor swap meets held at a fairground. Purchased a top of the line steam cleaner which works amazing...cost a mere 40 dollars. That might be another option.

Good Luck!

Just thought I'd add this humorous story about one of those "how to people" that were on the radio one day. He told a story about the time he recommended to a woman caller to place oatmeal on her carpet before vaccuming. The oatmeal apparently picks up all sort of foreign material making the job easier. Her irate husband called the next day and berated the show for having ruined his carpets with that stupid advice. Turns out the woman cooked the oatmeal first!!
I almost feel evil for laughing. :O)

Wow you know what I tried and seems to work is hydrogen peroxide, I have used it before on stains on clothes and it seems to work on the stains on the carpets, Ipoured it on then used a brush to rub it. , but I don't know what will happen if I steam clean it again will the stains return?? we have a big green cleaning mashine by Bisell. thanks for all the advise!
If you really want your carpet clean find a company that uses Von Schrader machines. I own a janitorial business and I bought a couple for commercial use. They work so well I started using them in residential homes including my own home. This method of carpet cleaning is superior to steam cleaning. Steam cleaning at one time was considered the best way to clean your carpet, this was determined in 1988. Just like everything else technology has made serious strides in carpet cleaning.

I found a formula that works if you are patient. It may be patented, but then again, its all household items, so I don't know. Anyways, here goes. Its so simple, yet it seems to have worked for me, on old spots and new ones, although some people have had to treat more than once.

1 cup 3%peroxide
1 level teaspoon baking soda
1 drop liquid hand soap

Mix in a small plastic or glass bowl with a plastic spoon for fifteen seconds, and pour directly on spot to be treated, making sure to soak the entire spot. Don't be afraid to sniff around to make sure you get the whole spot. Do not soak up, let air dry for two days, some carpets take less drying, some take longer. You can set a fan to blow on the area to dry it quicker. Once the spot is finally dry, it should be odor free. This worked on an extremely smelly pee spot for me. Don't put this in a sealed container as the peroxide and baking soda mixture will cause it to explode possibly. You can't see the oxidation, but believe me, its there. Like I said, it worked for me, and its really really cheap to make. Good luck!
Please do yourself a favor & find a professional carpet cleaner in your town. Forget the above advice & becoming a chemist! The Von Shrader Shampoo advice - terrible! That is 1960's technology still being used by senior citizen carpet cleaners. It has less power than your vacuum & will not flush & rinse urine out of your carpet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You need to know what type of carpet fibers you are dealing with before you attempt the use of urine stain removers! You may end up setting the stain or creating a high ph burn.

A professional carpet cleaner will use a truckmount system - steam cleaning & apply the correct action.

We have tools today that can flush & rinse the urine from the sub-floor, pad & carpet. A general carpet cleaning is not good enough & you must find a professional that knows how to deal with urine treatment first before the entire cleaning. Not every carpet cleaner is a professional! Until you remove the urine from the sub-floor & pad, you will continue to have issues & you can blame it on all kinds of stupid things.

You can also have the carpet removed from the tack, have the effected pad cut out & replaced, have the sub-floor cleaned & sealed, have the carpet backing cleaned, reinstall & clean entire carpet - problem solved!

Too many crazy home remedies result in stains - permanent. That's okay, you'll end up paying me to install a bonded insert (patch)
