In the first of two shows on Saturday, Caitlyn won First In Class, Best Male/Female, Best in Breed and a Group 2, with a group showing of seven breeds. We placed above a woman who has helped me in the past UKC shows and turned out to be a great friend. Too great for her own good. I was ringside speaking with a friend, waiting to be called in the ring for Group when I looked up and saw her with her Border Collie and a couple others trotting around the ring. She ran past me yelling, 'YOU SHOULD BE IN HERE!!!'. I MISSED THE CALL!!! I ran to the gate and fell in just in front of a Corgi and followed everyone around. At the end, the judge called me out first and asked me to go stand behind the table; the left the table out after the Corgi. After my screw up getting in the ring, I was a bit shocked to be called on. The next person to get called went ahead of me and the Border Collie was then placed behind me. All this left me a LOT confused. All I could think is that the BC was owned by a different club's president, or at least a person high up in the club's officers and is also a judge. No way could I have been placed above her. Then the judge called out the fourth place dog to fall in behind the BC at which point she proclaimed, 'There is my places, 1, 2, 3, and 4.' I was SHOCKED! Shocked but VERY HAPPY!!!! We decided that since the second show's entry was already paid for, we'd hang out and have fun. So we literally treated it as a fun match. So long as Caity didn't poop or pee in the ring, I didn't really care what she did. She on the other hand had a different idea. She was out for blood. We got the same breed ribbons but in group we placed fourth - still a placement worthy of a ribbon and still seven breeds. Still very happy. Caitlyn performed as well if not better than the first show. While she didn't place higher for this, I was still very happy and that got better after the ribbons were handed out in Group. The judges tend to be a lot more open and willing to speak to the exhibitors in UKC events and Saturday I got a very welcome and totally unexpected surprise. The judge, David Allen, walked over to Caitlyn and I and told me she has excellent movement and perfect gate. He also said that the only thing he could say was not right was her coat. I told him that we've been struggling to get it worked out. He said that her texture was perfect and I agreed that I've heard this from many, but that there just wasn't enough; she needed more of it. I told him that we've been working through that and it has improved over the last couple months. He said once we get this sorted, we'll have a non-stop winner. This made my day, week, year - to hear this from a judge. Vance |
