So I am throwing this thread out to find out WHY did YOU choose a DOG???? I will start.... After much thought and listing all the wonderful things (and the NOT so wonderful things) I think my main reason is: They are 24/7!!!! ALWAYS..... Hubby leaves for work and most of the time works more hours than needed. Kids are out of the house, have their own lives, families, interests, friends are the same... BUT...there is NO creature on this earth that, no matter what time of the day or night....no matter what the weather....no matter what has caught their interest at THAT moment.... THEY WIL BE THERE, BY YOUR SIDE, WITH A SMILE, AND A 'LEAN'...TO COMFORT, AMUSE, LOVE AND BE TOTALLY ATTENTIVE, TO KNOW WHAT YOUR ARE FEELING AND HOW TO MAKE IT BETTER!!! THAT IS """WHY A DOG"""...(for me, at least). |

I am not a cat lover. Why a dog? They are so "human like". Dogs love you unconditional. Dogs are so excited to see you even if you just left for a minute to take out the garbage. Dogs can "sense" when you don't feel well or are having a bad day. Dogs will try to please you - especially with treats in hand! Dogs greet you in the morning with a big fat face lick. Dogs are great company - but do hog up the couch. Dogs will do almost anything to defend their human and keep them from harm. Dogs also do silly things that make you laugh - or tear your hair out Dogs Rule |
Hey Val, were you seriously considering a SQUIRREL for a pet at one time? To answer your question.... Because dogs are the best snuggle buddies and no matter how bad your day just being with them makes it all better. |
I think Diane said it all. They are odd but you can say that about a lot of animals. I not keen on cats also some animals we keep should not be caged up |
Why limit yourself? I have dogs and a cat. |
Val, everything you said about a dog is the reason why for me too. Cindy |
When we first moved to Florida, we brought Pearl our cat with us. We decided, that we would get a dog because Chuck was gone a lot and I felt, since the children were all grown, I would have the time to put into taking care of a dog and that is why I adobted Violet..then China and Asia. I love cats and dogs... |

This made me think too--that there have only been 4 years out of my whole life that I did not have a dog or more than one dog in my life. During those four years we were busy and had very young children--husband and I both traveled a lot and juggled to make sure we never traveled at the same time-- and lived away from all family so we had no back ups to take care of children or pets. I remember thinking during that time--something is just missing--- As soon as we moved back from Atlanta to Nashville and were closer to extended family--added dogs back to our family. We have always also had at least one cat as well--even during the dogless 4 years! |
I love animals. It was rabbits for me at first. We had two litter trained rabbit that roamed the house, they would hop up onto the dining room chairs and nap on them, but my husband was allergic so we haven't had another rabbit since they died. We got a Newfoundland whist we had our last bunny, because of their good nature with other animals and I wanted one and then the OES. Dogs are just the best companions. Dogs are the ultimate love bugs, they just so want to be with you and want your love and we so want to give it back. They are always happy to see you and they make you laugh. Life without a dog would be dull. I'm proud to take them for a walk and I want to show them off and I want people without dogs to know what fun it is to have them. I want more but my husband says two for now |
And...I think there is a reason that, when you spell.... D....O...G...... Backwards, it spells.... G....O....D ~~~~unconditional love perhaps??? Forgiveness for whatever we do?? Understanding???? |
Oh geez there are SO MANY REASONS! I was raised with sheepdogs and as an only child, they were my best friend and siblings. The comfort they give me has continued through my life. I'm never alone when they're around. They don't argue, they don't usually talk back, and give themselves to us unconditionally. One kiss or snuggle is enough to turn my bad day into a good one. |
This makes me think of a sentence I read this past week, in an essay by some professor (speaking of her own dog): "Dogs do this: They hold joy and love and solace in a way humans can't, and then they die." I think it captures the essence of their very precious existence very poignantly. |
