At the playground, one little kid started screaming about the "irish wolfhound" (right after a shave) (and yes my roofus is about that big, his chin is level with my belly button!!) of course he has also been called a bearded collie. right now nobody believes he is a pure OES, i guess when their hair is shaved people have a hard time recognizing the breed! I can't blame them, the first time I shaved him I thought somehow he got switched on me while I was cutting!! anybody have anything else to add to the list? |
|
When he was first shaved a lady thought our sheepie
was a young greyhound......... |
When I first saw Pepsi at the Local Shelter they had him listed as a Hound?
His coat was about 2 inches long I set them straight...lol I think he looks like a confused Dalmatian now..lol |
Someone asked me if Clyde was a labradoodle at the dog park. I laughed because I thought she was joking and the woman got really defensive and insisted that that's what he looked like and that he really didn't look like a OES. Clyde was in full puppy coat and couldn't have looked more like a sheepdog. |
Definitely Bearded Collie. The eveluators at the dog training school even asked for the Bearded Collie when it was our turn! I gave them a dollar to go out and buy a clue.
They've also been confused for Panda Bears by the neighborhood kids. The best bear story: Carl decided to take a lap through the neighbor's yard the other day he ran at full speed through the bush line that seperates the housed and did a large loop at about 100 miles an hour. No problem except for the fact that their grandkid who's about 4 or 5 was playing in the yard. (Unatteded might I add!) When he spotted Carl running full speed through the yard he started screaming at the top of his lungs that there was a Giant Panda Bear loose! That kid didn't stop screaming for a good 5 minutes because he couldn't find whatever adult was supposed to be watching him. Thank God Carl didn't even get near him who knows what kind of bear slobber attack story we would have had to deal with! Did I say that we're having a fence building party at the end of the month? We've been trying to do it for years now but the neighbors whose yard Carl ran through oppose fences! |
So far nothing, but no one ever calls him an OES. It's always "one of those Shaggy dogs" or "hey...that's the dog that was on The Little Mermaid". I didn't even remember an OES being in the Little Mermaid until someone said that! lol |
Lots of people have asked me if Tasker was a standard poodle (when he has a haircut)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IMAGINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No one would confuse him with a grehound.............like his Mom he's a bit "full figured" |
I haven't seen sheepdogs around and about for so many years that I'm actually surprised that a number of people have come up asking if Chumleigh is a sheepdog, especially given her summer haircut.
On a related note (perhaps this should be a separate post?), I recall seeing more sheepdogs when I was a kid (I am 37) but in the past 8-10 years, the big friendly dogs have been Bernese Mtn dogs. I'm also seeing alot more St. Bernards lately -- another popular dog from my childhood that seems like it is making a comeback. . . And the neighborhood has become positively overrun with pugs. THere are dozens of them in a few block radius. They are cute dogs, but the number is skyrocketing. Anyone else noticing similar dog trends? |
Nobody ever gets what Barney is, but they never offer a suggestion either. It's always, AH, so cute, what kind of dog is that?
I've always thought that sheepdogs are pretty distinct looking, so I'm always surprised that nobody seems to know what he is! I LOVE Bernese Mountain dogs. I think they are so pretty. The dogs that I see a ton of these days are a lot of Chow Chows. I love their pretty blue tongue! |
I tell the little kids in my neighborhood that my guy is a polar bear. One boy asked if he likes to eat fish beacuse he would bring some out next time.
I don't think his mother was looking forward to that day. |
When I was walking Sky the other day one of the neighbors up the street asked what kind of dog she was, and I told him she is an old english sheepdog in a summer hair cut. He said "Really! I didn't know they came in short hair too!" I started laughing, which made me cough, so I didn't bother trying to re- explain she had a HAIR CUT. I just kept walking. |
While Baxter, Cassiopia and I were out walking last week, a man stopped and asked if they were "Captain Kangaroo Bebe" dogs. It did take me a few seconds to match up "Bebe" with Old English Sheepdogs (hey -it's been quite some time since I saw Captain Kangaroo).
And we have the local kid who loves Baxter and wants to have his parents get him "one of those shaggy dogs". And Maxmm - you're not the only one whose dog has been mistaken for a bear. Although our dogs were not seen - just their pawprints were visible in the snow. My neigbor called me last winter to come down and look at the "bear paw prints". I had to show her that the paw prints were actually Baxter's - by having Baxter walk beside the "bear prints". Jennifer, Baxter, Cassiopia and Sharkey |
When Mitch has had his hair cut he has been called A lab,a Dalmation .
We once left him in the car while we went to do some shopping and when we came back there was a woman talking to him through the window and when we got closer she turned round and asked us where we got our poodle from as she had been after one just like him for ages . |
People have never guessed what Panda is..They ask...but she was mistaken for a blind dog, because of her really light blue eyes...I looked at the lady like she was crazy...Blind??? She thought Pandas eyes were covered with a film....Poor Panda.. |
I had an old english with one blue and one brown eye .While out walking him this old woman came up to us to stroke the dog and when she saw the blue eye the question was "Why did they use a blue glass eye ? They must do brown ones aswell."
It took a bit of explaining that they where both real eyes. |
A glass eye??!! Yea gads!
Not much on sheepdogs, but when the new neighbors moved in they confided their young son said, "Oh boy, we get to live next door to the polar bears!" Great Pyrenees. |
(the UK guys will find this funnier I guess)
Woof has been called the Durex dog (Should be Dulux - a paint brand which uses an OES in advertising) also the Andrex dog (they use a lab puppy for advertising in the UK) oh, and a Polar Bear..... |
After telling people what our little one is (a Maltese), people OFTEN then assume Yuki is the mother!!!
I just look at them. Other than that, she's always called a Dalmation though she's never been in a puppy cut. |
HEY JOAHAEYO!!!!!!! Where ya been??? HOW WAS THE HONEYMOON????? |
The honeymoon was BEAUTIFUL!! It SUCKED coming back to the crappy town we live in Oklahoma. I hate it esp. when you compare the summer Colorado weather with oklahoma.
Colorado is an OES' dream, imo! We had so much fun hiking and riding the Gondola. We saw tom cruise and oprah's house. I wrote in medical&nutrition (forum) that we all went hiking yesterday. We went butt early in the morning, but I still think we all lost 5lbs (we ordered two meals EACH at Sonic after the hike) *oink* Anyways, I've been so busy. I'm having some medical problems, so I've been at the hospital every day. That leaves little time to be on here since I promised my husband a new recipe for dinner every day this month! Tonight is cordon bleu, homemade bread, and strawberry salad. I always hope I don't screw it up. hahahaha |
ooooh, make me homesick! Used to live in Summit County, Colorado. Vail is where we went for movies. Aspen was lunch stop on way to hiking or back country roads. Alas, our freebie tow tickets didn't include Vail or Aspen, so rarely skied there........and that's when tow tickets were $10-13, Where where you?
sheepieboss who just realized she isn't signed in |
Sounds wonderful!!
Hope you are better soon!! Wanna come fix dinner for us?????????? |
