Buying an out of state puppy
In the pst, we were able to find pups locally (we live in Los Angeles), but in the 14 years since we got Claire, things have changed. I have scoured the state of California (using the breeder referral from OESCA) and while some are contemplating litters, no one has even a pregnant bitch at the moment. So, I have resorted to looking out of state. Who has had experience with having their pup shipped to them? How does it work? Is it traumatizing for the dog? Is it better to drive them, even if we're talking multiple day trips than fly them in a crate in the belly of an airplane? Your thoughts and experience would be greatly appreciated. |

| It is fairly common have OES puppies transported or shipped over fairly long distances these days as it is a rare breed with few good breeders (i.e. it's very unlikely an individual in North America will live close by a respectable OES breeder who will has available pups). I had a 6 hour drive for my 2 puppies, and most people I know who had sheepdogs have had them shipped, so I think it's pretty safe. |
| We had both our current dogs shipped from Denver to Texas. We decided a 2 hour non-stop flight was easier on a puppy than a 12 hour car ride, not to mention 24 hours of driving for us. Neither dog seemed to have a problem with it, they were 9 and 8 weeks old. There can be issues in severe weather times of year; some airlines won't take live animals when temperature is above or below certain thresholds, ours left Denver in March and February, a year apart. |
I had both my sheepies shipped from Montana to New York. The first one came in late December with no weather problems. The second one came in October and was delayed due to an unusual snow storm out West  Both were about 8 or nine weeks old - they shouldn't be shipped earlier than that and they also there are temperature limits for them to fly.I would say its safe. I would try to get the most direct flight possible. It is very stressful however but well worth it when they finally get out of that crate and lick your face off! A reputable breeder off the referral list will be very helpful to you. But honestly, there may be a waiting list. et on it and wait. it will be worth it. Good Luck and keep us posted. |
| We had our baby shipped from Iowa to NJ without any problem. She was clean well fed and happy. I believe it took about 24 hours. |
"Heart"  flew through the heavens to me, in St. Louis (2013 Nationals in about 2 weeks!!) from CO~~~ She came from a reputable breeder, and when she peeked her little head out of the crate...our eyes met...and she was ..well...MY HEART.... Here is a pic of her about 3 days after she arrived....  so...no need to fear...you may have to wait for a quality OES pup from a quality breeder, but, it is soooo well worth it!!!!!!
