Haunted House in the Neighborhood?

Sam loves to go for walks in our neighborhood. Well, really he likes to visit everyone and get all the attention more than the walking.

There is one house he refuses to walk in front of. It's weird. If we are walking on that side of the street, he puts the brakes on about 4 feet before their property line and refuses to budge. No whining, no barking, he's just not moving. Our choices are to turn around and go back, or cross the street. He'll go past it as long as we are on the other side of the street, but he still goes at a much slower, hesitant pace. Once we are several feet past that yard he's fine.

Yesterday, as we were getting closer to that house, we were meeting up with a kid on a bike. Of course, Sam was all excited and was oblivious to where we were. By the time the kid passed by, we were about halfway past that particular yard. Sam suddenly realized where we were and made a bee-line for the other side of the street. He wasn't freaking out, but he was quick about getting away from it.

I've never met the people that live there, but there is nothing obviously strange about the house. There are a couple of houses in the neighborhood that are vacant and unkempt. He has no problem with them. This house is well maintained, although I never see the owners out and about. I've joked with Chris that maybe we should have the police check for dead bodies or something. 8O I know animals can sense things we can't, so now I'm starting to be a little wary of this house.

Anyone else have an experience like this?

There was a thread years ago about dogs seeing ghosts. Do a search and you'll find that it went for several pages. (not as long as the pregnancy after tubes tying thread though....)

I just started reading through that thread. Wow! 7 pages worth is going to be a fun read.

Sam hasn't ever done anything like that in the house, but both our cats do. There's one particular stair they will both occasionally stop on, and suddenly look wildly around at the ceiling with their ears laid back and their teeth bared. Whisper used to do it a lot when he was the only pet we had and Chris (DH) said he was just insane. Then after we got Brie, she started doing it, same step, with Whisper nowhere around. 8O Weird.
my guess is Vampires!! you never see the people that live there and he is probably sensing the danger. doesn't want you to get bitten.

I told Chris (DH) that it reminds me of the movie The Burbs. 8O
very interesting indeed---

maybe do a little investigating as to who lives there?????
Karen, I just met the people who are next door to that house last week. They, of course, make a point to come out and love on Sam when they see us going by. I'm trying to decide exactly how to go about asking them about the neighbor. "So, how many bodies are buried next door?" or "Does the screaming from that house keep you up all night?" or maybe "Does your neighbor dig graves in his yard every night, or just on weekdays?"

Thoughts?

Well I guess those questions would do the trick! 8O 8O

No clue--what I would ask--I might just 'stalk' until I saw someone drive in or out..and try to get a good look!
Dogs can have funny behaviours over next to nothing as we'd see it, a noise a smell that we are not aware of for instance.

Maybe they have an ultrasonic animal deterrent in their front yard?
Update: I still don't know anything about the people who live in that house, but Sam isn't as wary of it now. Late last week (Thursday, maybe), we were walking that way and he kept going on the same side of the street. I kept watching to see how far he'd get before he changed his mind. Nope, he walked all the way past it. Then I noticed that their truck - which is normally always there - wasn't in the driveway. :lmt:

I vary our route often, but the other times we went by this weekend, the truck was gone and Sam had no problems. Then today, when we walked by, the truck was home and he didn't seem to mind. On our way home, there was a man outside in the driveway. I thought this would be the perfect time end the mystery. I waved and said hello. Sam's little bum was wiggling like crazy. And...the guy just looked at us and didn't say a word. No smile. No wave. Nothing. :headbang:

Oh, well. At least Sam seems to be over whatever it was.

Yep, Sam knew. Grinch lives there.
