Terrible and disgusting. Dogs should not be neutered/spayed until over a year old. |
Some things from my experience as a vet tech: First, because neutering is much simpler and less invasive than spaying, it can be done pretty quickly. And if they took him pretty much straight to pre-op when she dropped him off, it is conceivable he could be awake and ready to go after 2 hours. Second, our standard was to avoid the pain meds, especially on younger animals, unless they showed signs that they needed it. However, this was 20 years ago, and I'm seeing most vets now giving the animal a pain patch at the very least to help for the first 12-24 hours. BUT - we also kept the animals for a minimum of 4 hours after they started to shake off the anesthesia before sending them home from any procedure, usually longer for more invasive surgeries. (Declawing was a mandatory 24 hour stay.) Calling the owner and telling her that he's awake and doing well after just 2 hours is one thing, but suggesting he go home that quickly doesn't seem right to me. And neutering at 4 months (assuming it was not mandated by a shelter/adoption contract) is too young, imho. I would hope the vet did not make that recommendation. Frankly, if they think he's "too young" for pain meds, then they shouldn't be willing to risk anesthesia or sedation either. Especially for an elective procedure. The deed is done, and it can't be changed. And the dog will probably be just fine. But I would definitely look for a different vet. |
I wasn't comfortable when she told me this either. They did send him home on Rimadyl after all. But she said he cried and cried and just walked around and cried. Poor thing, I know that is too soon to send him home. I'm not even sure he was there for 2 hours. And this is why I haven't gone to that vet clinic anymore. We took our Pooh Bear there when we first got him in 1999 and took me about 3 visits to start going somewhere else. |
Sad Drive thru surgery. |
So sad--What is done is done--but you can continue to encourage her to find a new vet! |
