Dr. Forshey, the state veterinarian for Ohio, had samples sent off to the west coast for testing and we still haven’t heard back about those. As of September 6, he said that it is TOO soon to state definitively that the problem is a circovirus. The tissue tested did test positively for circovirus, and it is likely that it is circovirus, but they do not know if that is what's making the dogs so sick. They are still awaiting test results on several other dogs. THEY DO KNOW THAT THE MEANS OF CONTAGION IS THROUGH FECES. They do not yet have a handle on the period of incubation. Dogs cannot "catch" this virus from pigs, He said the best thing that dog-owners can do is to behave as people do in a flu epidemic. Dog parks, especially, should be avoided. It is with this last statement that makes me do this. Since our gathering is held at a public dog park and I seen my share of others not cleaning up after their own dogs properly, I can’t with a clear conscience ask others to visit. I’d feel beyond horrified if someone went home with this… I’m deeply sorry for anyone who made arrangements, including the hotel reservations and hope that you can keep the end of September next year open for us again. Take this and go to the other events scheduled and have fun with them knowing that next year you can come to Dayton and have fun with us again. Vance, Jen, Zoey and of course, Caitlyn |

That sounds like the safe and prudent thing to do...sad news for those who were attending though |
I was just thinking about that virus Vance. You made the right call. I was just at the vets, and meant to ask for more info on it and I forgot. Every once and awhile, those senior moments sneak up on me. Lisa Franke and Mattie |
Thanks to both of you for helping me think I made the right decision. To do the other could have been catastrophic. We will miss seeing our Sheepie friends though... Vance |
See you at the Rheindog parade. |

Right call. Sorry but sheepie health is #1. |
It's a shame, but you have definitely made the right call. |
Much better safe then sorry |
Too risky this year. Good call. |
We were really looking forward to coming this year but I think you did the right thing. We all want to keep our "babies" healthy. See everybody next year. |
this wasn't one of the events we normally attend, but I think you made a really good call. Better to be safe than very sorry! |
Good thinking, Vance. A bummer, but a very sensible decision. Personally, if I had been one of the attendees, I would have canceled on you, with even a slight chance of exposure. (Oscar's had MRSA 4 times..... ) Laurie and Oscar the "Cootie Magnet" |
It's the right call. Even if your dog didn't come down with anything, he/she could have brought it back to your hometown and the problem would have spread to many more locations. |
Tough decision--but definitely the right call! |
Just bringing this back up for those who may have missed it earlier. See you next year!!! Vance, Jen, Zoey and Caitlyn |
