Does anyone know if it's OK for a sheepie to take Comfortis (medicine name = spinosad)? What are the types of drugs that need to be avoided? Isn't there one that has to be because of a genetic marker or something like that? |

We've been giving it to both girls for as long as we;ve had them with no ill effects with either. They just got a big chewable tab about two weeks ago as a matter of fact. We swear by it. We give them that and the seven cats get Advantix and all is good in our home for months. Vance |
I think you are thinking of the Multi-drug sensitivity test for dogs; MDR-1. this will let you know if your dog has the genetic make up to be sickened by several anti-parasitic drugs, anti-diahhreal ones, and anti-cancer ones as well. I had also heard that some anesthesias were included. The gene mutation affects 10 herding breeds, sheepdog included. the following link has a list of the drugs to be avoided if your dogs tests positive for the mutated gene: http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/depts-VCPL/drugs.aspx It's a very easy test to have done; we did Tonks and Luna so we'd never have to worry about it. |
Yep, we had to have Kensie tested by the WSU lab before she began her treatment. Just takes a cheek swab and they send you the results. Kensie was not a carrier. |
