USDA crack down Internet Pet Sales

(Didn't really know where to post this, so...here it is)

Just read this in the paper, but it may not be news to most here. In short, an animal purchaser must lay eyes on the chosen animal before the purchase.

While this is aimed to severly regulate unscrupulous back yard puppy mill evil, I can think of a few ways that it will continue.

BUT, what is it going to do to our most reputable breeders?? So many of our pups are shipped to their new homes, chosen by trusted breeders. The good guys seem to take the biggest hit with any broad spectrum action.

Are these measures in effect in other countries?

Thoughts?

I was reading about this online yesterday. The article I read was brief, so I'm sure it was missing a lot of the nuances of the law, but in essence it said you cannot sell a puppy sight unseen. So no longer can you do an internet communication with a breeder or mill, or a phone call, and have a puppy you've never seen for yourself sent to your home.

I wasn't sure, but I thought I saw some reference to the law affecting anyone with 3 breeding females or more. Some people seemed upset about something to do with the law regulating how your breeding dogs and puppies could be kept; they could no longer be in the home...?

Having to travel to a breeder far away to see your new pup in person will surely be a financial hardship to many. But at the risk of sounding naive and starting a controversial conversation, wouldn't it be worth it if it helped to end puppy mills?

Unfortunately, it really doesn't help anyone but the "sub-standard" breeders. All this will do is encourage the sale of puppies at Petland or other brick & mortar locations. Seems that every proposed law that is meant to discourage irresponsible breeding also hurts the responsible breeders. :-(

No I don't think it will help much, banning puppy sales in pet stores would be much more effective. And this could potentially be very harmful for rare breeds such as ours. Especially because North America is so huge and it's far more probable for any interested sheepdog owner to live very far from good breeders. I know a lot of sheepdog puppies are bought "sight unseen", including Mady and Gracie (and Karen's Murph and Shindig Sam and many more)! Depending on how difficult it is to get the federal license (and what about international breeders like Amber, a large chunk of her puppies are sent to the US), this could be very very bad for our breed, sheepdogs are endangered? Kick 'em while they're down! :|

Ban puppy sales in pet stores, work more towards educating the puppy-buying public, and work to prosecute crummy puppy mills with existing animal abuse laws.
How would they know. Unless they follow evey sale of a puppy ( this will never happen. Just lip service

that's a very good point. If no one ever complains, how would they know?
The reputable breeders that ship a pup to you usually don't actually "sell" on line. Maybe they have a website but I know in my experience usually there is A LOT of contact via telephone, and referrals are made and checked out, etc.

Ok that is a good point, I did not purchase Mady by going on a website, picking her and adding her to a cart, entering shipping information and checking out. However if the legislation requires an actual in-person visit, it is still very problematic (many great dogs are bought from great reputable breeders without ever having in-person meetings), and as Allison pointed out, how would you enforce it (though I am against enforcing it because I think the law is poor)?

And many puppy mill dogs are sold sight-seen, you meet the "breeder" in a mall parking lot and see the puppy, and to most people, an 8 week puppy is a puppy is a puppy, and hard to resist.

that's a really good point. We've heard that story enough times. I think their heart is in the right place, but this legislation is seriously flawed.
